Option in Nursing Management

The Southern Illinois University School of Nursing, the Nursing Gem of Southern Illinois, offers a 12 credit hour program, featuring online courses, for nurse managers and those who want to move into management positions.
The program is designed to strengthen and expand the management skills of registered nurses in hospitals, home health agencies, long-term care, and other health care settings where registered nurses serve as managers. Licensure as a registered nurse is required; nurses with an associate degree or diploma are eligible to enroll as unclassified undergraduate students..
The program includes four courses, each for three hours of academic credit. The courses are delivered online with one or two classroom meetings in each course. Students need to have internet, access and basic email, and word processing skills, to use the online format.

Each course is eight weeks long. One course begins at the start of the semester; the second begins at mid-semester. Students enrolling in two courses each semester will complete the program in two semesters.Credit earned in the nurse management program may be transferable to the RN-BS program in the School of Nursing Experienced nursing faculty will teach the courses.

Course content will include:

  • The dynamic role of the nurse manager in the health care organization;
  • Principles of nursing management;
  • Leader and management theories, skills and behaviors;
  • Leadership concepts including: power, teamwork, collaboration, planning, empowerment, motivation, & decision making;
  • Recruiting, hiring, and retaining a nursing workforce;
  • Evaluating performances of professional and support staff;
  • Supporting professional development;
  • Managing conflict, developing negotiation skills, & handling labor relations;
  • Health care finance/health care economics;
  • Budgeting skills and processes for the nurse manager;
  • Nursing as a business;
  • Management communication skills.

There have been changes in the scheduling of courses for both the Health Care and Nursing Administration graduate degree specialization and the nursing management certificate programs. Therefore, the next cohort of students will be admitted to the nursing management certificate courses in January 2009.  An information packet will be sent to you in late summer 2008 if you contact Dr. Kelly with your name and address.


Required Courses:

Nurs 491  Foundations of Nursing Management (3)
Provides an overview of healthcare organizations and roles of nurse managers. Major principles of nursing management are examined. Population – based approach explores community healthcare services.
Prerequisite: Consent of Program Director.


Nurs 492 Nursing Management and Leadership (3)
This course focuses on the nurse manager role and behaviors for leading staff and influencing health care delivery. Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management.

Nurs 493 Human Resource Management for Nurse Leaders (3)
Examines the knowledge and skills for effective human resource management.  Content covers recruitment, hiring, retention, performance appraisals, professional development, conflict management, negotiation and labor relations.
Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management.

Nurs 494 Healthcare Finance, Budgeting and Communications (3)
Focuses on the knowledge and skills for financial management, budgeting, and communication that relate to the role of the nurse manager.
Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management.
