Mark Luer Named Dean of School of Pharmacy

Mark Luer, PharmD, FCCP, has been named dean of the School of Pharmacy after serving as interim dean since July 2018. A longtime contributor to the School’s success, he is highly regarded as a collaborative and inclusive leader who is strongly committed to the School of Pharmacy’s advancement. Under Luer’s leadership, the School has continued to produce pharmacy candidates who are among the nation’s best in board pass rates and assessments, ranking number one among the eight programs in Illinois and Missouri for first attempt North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination board pass rates.

New Concurrent PharmD and MS in Healthcare Informatics

Healthcare informatics merges computer technology and clinical expertise to effectively organize, analyze, manage and use clinical knowledge and data for problem-solving and decision-making. SIUE now offers students the opportunity to obtain both the PharmD and an MS in healthcare informatics within four years. The new program will provide graduates the opportunity to improve patient outcomes by integrating information technology solutions into the medication-use process.

Alumna Isaacs is AADE Educator of the Year

The American Association of Diabetes Educators named Diana Isaacs, RPh, PharmD ’09, as its Educator of the Year earlier in August. Isaacs, whose passion for diabetes education began in the School, is an endocrine clinical pharmacy specialist and continuous glucose monitoring program coordinator at the Cleveland Clinic Endocrine and Metabolism Institute Diabetes Center.

Poirier Receives AACP Distinguished Teaching Scholar Award

Terri Poirier, PharmD, MPH, FASHP, FCCP and professor of pharmacy practice and senior scholar in the School of Pharmacy, received the 2019 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Distinguished Teaching Scholar Award at the annual meeting. The AACP Distinguished Teaching Scholar Award is designed to recognize excellence by academic pharmacy faculty engaged in and/or supporting scholarly teaching, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Future Healthcare Workers Attend Annual Healthcare Diversity Summer Camp

Held in June, the Healthcare Diversity Summer Camp exposed students to career opportunities in the healthcare industry. The collaborative camp was hosted by the Schools of Pharmacy and Nursing, the SIU School of Dental Medicine and the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior’s nutrition program. The week consisted of interactive and hands-on activities, presentations regarding the various healthcare fields, a sample of college life and an overview of the ACT.

Pharmacy Students Finish Among Top 10% Nationwide in Research Competition

A School of Pharmacy team of three second-year students celebrated their proud accomplishment of finishing as a finalist in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Clinical Research Challenge. The team offered strong showings through three rounds of competition to land among the final eight teams nationally, and top 10 percent, of the 82 participating schools. The unique competition invites teams of three students to compete nationally by participating in an online journal club and submitting a letter of intent and a clinical research proposal.
