Lubsch Named Fellow in PPAG

Lisa Lubsch, PharmD, clinical professor of pharmacy practice, was recently recognized as a Fellow in the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG). The program recognizes excellence in pediatric pharmacy practice by acknowledging and promoting public awareness of pharmacists who have distinguished themselves in pediatric pharmacy practice.

Pharmacy Students Gain Clinical, Cultural Experience in Guatemala

A team of School of Pharmacy students have returned from an immersive clinical and cultural experience in Antigua, Guatemala, feeling excited about and prepared for the mission ahead of them as doctors of pharmacy.

Five students participated in a five-week Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) from mid-February to mid-March, including David Felts, of Belleville, Nikolina Golob, of St. Louis, Ashley Riley, of St. Charles, Mo., Abbey Rodeghiero, of Morton, and capstone student Carlos Pardo, of St. Louis.

School Hosts Ladies Night Out: Heart Health and Wellness Expo

A ladies’ night out event, organized by the School’s American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), provided public awareness and education about women’s heart health and wellness, and promoted the profession of pharmacy and pharmacists’ role as a women’s health resource. The event was held April 4 at The Weingarten in Belleville. 

The event featured Zumba classes, blood pressure and depression screenings, and educational information and giveaways from more than 20 vendors, including the School's Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) and the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) organization. Proceeds from the event were donated to the American Heart Association.

Wilhelm Introduces Nonprescription Drug Reference

Clinical Associate Professor Miranda Wilhelm, PharmD, along with co-editor Cortney Mospan, PharmD, introduced the newly revised “Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs Quick Reference” at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting held March 22-25 in Seattle.

“The purpose of the ‘Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs’ is a comprehensive textbook that introduces the student pharmacist to nonprescription medicines and provides self-care faculty with a robust background for teaching,” Wilhelm said. “The Quick Reference is the next step in knowledge management and evolution."

Students Win Third APhA National Video Award

A team of pharmacy students won the Most Humorous PharmFlix video award at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting held March 22-25 in Seattle. The 10th Annual APhA-Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP) PharmFlix contest was themed “Celebrate 50 years of APhA-ASP: Embracing our Profession’s Call.”

Belleville native Sarah Surmeier wrote and produced the video with Jazmine Rosales, of Huntley, as producer. View the video, which was also nominated among the top 10 for Best Overall PharmFlix.

Norvell Earns National APhA Scholarship

Brett Norvell, of Moro, has received the Pharmacists Mutual Community Pharmacy Scholarship from the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation.The scholarship honors student pharmacists who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to advancing the future of community pharmacy in the U.S.

“The Pharmacists Mutual Community Pharmacy Scholarship will help support my future personal or professional goals by alleviating some of my tuition costs, but one should not overlook the principle that is set by the gesture of awarding me this scholarship,” Norvell said. “This serves as additional confirmation that I am heading in the right path with my career. It provides extra motivation for me to continue to work hard in school and in the community, by becoming the best resource I can to those around me.”

Students Among Top 20 Nationally

School of Pharmacy Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs Jingyang Fan, PharmD.

Pharmacy students continue to enhance their academic profile among the nation’s best in board pass rates and assessments.  

The class of 2018 North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination® (NAPLEX) board pass rate was 97.3 percent, which was No. 1 in both Missouri and Illinois, and ranked 19th nationally among 135 pharmacy schools. The NAPLEX exam measures a student’s knowledge of the practice of pharmacy.

“Our continued success in NAPLEX performance reflects our high-quality students, their hard work, and an excellent curriculum delivered by our dedicated faculty and staff,” said Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs Jingyang Fan, PharmD.
