Why the DNP Program at SIUE

With emphasis on evaluating evidence for practice and strengthening policy expertise, SIUE's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program prepares expert nurses for leadership in professional nursing practice and patient-centered health care delivery. Specializations include post-master's DNP, family nurse practitioner and nurse anesthesia.

“I take care of very sick babies in the NICU,” said Amy Shaw, post-master’s DNP '16. “I felt a degree of moral obligation to take better care of these patients, and it seemed to me that the DNP was the best way to garner these skills to improve my practice.”

Watch a video on why Shaw and other nursing professionals choose SIUE for their DNPs.

Explosive Growth for Alumni-Owned Company

G and G Anesthesia owners

Alumni Kyle Griffith and Frank Grasso are making their mark in the local healthcare industry, achieving pioneering success in dual roles as nurse anesthetists and businessmen. As Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), Griffith and Grasso’s company is breaking the mold of what’s been the traditional approach to anesthesia care. G & G Anesthesia’s model is CRNA focused, with the company now employing three anesthesiologists and 15 full-time CRNAs.

Griffin to be Inducted as AANP Fellow

Valerie Griffin

Valerie Griffin, DNP, assistant clinical professor and coordinator of the family nurse practitioner program, will join the Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP). Griffin’s induction will honor her outstanding contributions to health care through her main focus areas of education and policy. Griffin will be honored among 67 inductees on Thursday, June 22, during the AANP 2017 National Conference in Philadelphia. The AANP call the inductees “visionaries,” who will significantly contribute to the future of nurse practitioners and health care.

Determination and Support Help Student-Athletes Excel

In addition to the SIUE women's soccer team's athletic success on the field, its players exhibit a dogged determination to excel in their academic coursework and achieve a successful balance as student-athletes. Junior midfielder Lindsey Fencel and junior striker Caroline Hoefert, two undergraduate nursing students, are shining examples of this balance.
