Nursing Alum Inducted into Alumni Hall of Fame

Each year, SIUE honors remarkable alumni across academic disciplines who have achieved success in their respective fields, are role models and are testaments to SIUE’s educational excellence.

This year, the School of Nursing recognized Dr. Nelma Shearer, MS '88, a highly acclaimed and accomplished leader and innovator who is making an outstanding difference in nursing education, research and practice.

Gopalan Investigates Active Learning Strategies

Dr. Chaya Gopalan, associate professor of primary care and health systems nursing, is conducting a study to compare and analyze traditional instruction versus the flipped classroom methods. Under the flipped classroom approach, lecture content is introduced outside the classroom, allowing more time during class to process the information and practice the content in a variety of active learning strategies, including teamwork and instant feedback.

School Launches Suicide Prevention Campaign

According to research experts, there are more than 1,000 suicides on college campuses each year, with only six percent of college students suffering from depression seeking help on their own.

In September, SIUE's iCARE initiative supported International Suicide Prevention Awareness Week. iCARE is a multi-tiered collaboration between the SIUE Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy and Counseling Services, with the purpose of raising awareness regarding depression and suicide risk among college-age students.
