Welcome to Spring 2017!

Happy first day of spring classes.  If you are new to SIUE, or even if you need some resources, visit SIUE 101 on Blackboard.  Take a moment to familiarize yourself with policies, expectations, and resources that are available to you.
The newsletter this semester will provide information about success sessions, funding opportunities, and the Spring Research Symposium.

Assistantships

If you are still interested in finding an assistantship for spring, visit our website to view postings or contact the individual departments to find openings.  In addition to contacting your major department, you may consider looking at student affairs, the library, or other academic departments for opportunities.

If you already have an assistantship lined up for the spring, here are some important items to consider...

  • Do NOT begin working until you have signed your contract.  Students who begin working before the contract is processed may not receive payment for those days.
  • Your assistantship may provide a tuition waiver.  You are still responsible for all fees.
  • Read the handbook
  • If you make any changes to your classes once the semester begins, contact us right away.  Even if it seems like a simple switch, it may impact your tuition waiver and we need to update the system.  Email graduateschool@siue.edu with course changes.

If you have any questions, contact us.  We're here to help.

Resources for Graduate Students

The Writing Center
The SIUE Writing Center assists students and faculty/staff across the curriculum, and at all levels, to further develop their writing skills in order to become confident and independent writers and thinkers.  Through individual consultations the Writing Center will help students to: brainstorm on a topic, organize thoughts, outline an assignment, develop support, integrate research, learn a “style” of writing, identify and fix errors, and much more.  Please keep in mind that the Writing Center will not simply fix mistakes or write a paper for a student; instead, the consultants will teach students how to improve their work.  For more information, or to schedule a 30 minute consultation, please call our front desk (650-2045), visit our website (siue.edu/lss/writing), or stop by our main location – SSC 1254 (inside the Academic Advancement Center).

iThenticate
Like Turnitin, iThenticate is an intellectual property verification tool that checks documents for originality in order to prevent plagiarism. While Turnitin is used primarily for reviewing student assignments, iThenticate is designed for more scholarly academic works. Students can utilize iThenticate for verifying the originality and correctly cited sources in graduate student theses and dissertations and faculty are able to use the tool to verify research grants and other professional works.
After a document is submitted to iThenticate, a Similarity Report will be generated that indicates how much of the document matches other sources.

Grad Resources
Grad Resources is an external website that is available to all graduate students.  Grad Resources provides assistance with mentoring and offers a crisis help-line specifically for graduate students.
