A Season For The Child Continues Dec. 9 With The Nutcracker

A Season for the Child (SfC)--the family-oriented live theater season sponsored by the SIUE Friends of Theater and Dance (FOTAD)—continues its 28th season with a holiday classic that tells an age-old story that has entertained children and families for decades.

2 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 9
Katherine Dunham Hall Mainstage

The Nutcracker (the stage adaptation; not the ballet), by early 19th century author E.T.A Hoffmann, will be staged by the Imaginary Theatre Co., the traveling arm of the St. Louis Repertory Theatre.

Individual tickets for the Dec. 9 performance of The Nutcracker and the final show of the SfC 2017-18 season are $7 per person; children, $5; and are available through the SIUE Fine Arts box office, (618) 650-2774.

This has been a holiday fan favorite for FOTAD audiences for many years. The heartwarming centers on Marie, who is a little lonely after her family moves to a new town, but when her Godfather arrives with some mysterious Christmas Eve packages, she finds magic in very unlikely places. One of Godfather’s gifts is a wooden nutcracker that appears to be nothing more than a toy, but Marie soon discovers there may be more than meets the eye.

FOTAD, a support group for the SIUE Department of Theater and Dance, uses SfC proceeds to help fund merit awards for talented SIUE theater and dance students. Each year, FOTAD awards approximately $5,000 in merit scholarships to qualified students, also funding scholarships for new freshmen entering the theater and dance program.
