Inaugural Trustees' Diversity Lecture and Excellence Awards, Today

Today, the SIU Board of Trustees will host the inaugural Trustees’ Diversity Lecture and Excellence Awards featuring anti-racism activist Tim Wise in the John C. Guyon Auditorium at SIUC’s Morris Library. This event will open with a public reception in the library’s first-floor rotunda at 5 p.m. Wise will begin his lecture following the reception, at approximately 5:30 p.m. His books will be for sale and a signing will take place after the lecture. 

Tim Wise is among the nation’s most prominent anti-racism essayists, educators and lecturers.

Wise was selected for the inaugural lecture by the recently formed SIU System Diversity Advisory Council, made up of representatives from across SIU’s locations and staffed by Dr. Wesley Robinson-McNeese.

During Homecoming week student organizations will sell sample cups of chili for 50 cents, or bowls of chili for $2.

Safe Zone will be offering Ally Training for faculty and staff:

The goal of training is to provide attendees skills and understanding for supporting the LGBTQIA community. 

You must pre-register to attend this training.  Space is limited, so sign up now! 

What is Safe Zone?

 Safe Zone is a community of people who:

  • Will be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy if LGBTQIA people need help, advice, or just someone to talk to.
  • Will not tolerate homophobic, heterosexist, cisgenderism comments and actions but will address them in an educational and informative manner.
  • Have attended Safe Zone training and have information on campus and community resources.

Mission and Goals of Safe Zone:

Safe Zone's mission at SIUE is to develop a campus community of allies and provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and ally (LGBTQIA) students, faculty, and staff with the ultimate goal of developing SIUE as a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQIA people.
