Greetings from the Dean

I hope everyone had a good holiday and is recharged for the New Year!

The fall 2017 semester showed quite a bit of activity in regards to our fundraising efforts. I am happy to report that we received a very generous gift toward the Student Design Center Phase 2 construction, putting the project on the fast track for completion. If you have not had a chance to visit campus recently, I hope you will stop by soon and see our new Student Design Center. To see how our students utilize the Design Center, please click here.

In additional news, we also received financial resources from an exceptionally generous donor to create an endowed scholarship fund in entrepreneurship that will help the school annually recognize an engineering student and a business student with entrepreneurial ambitions.

I am sure 2018 will be as productive and rewarding as 2017. The School is very grateful for the opportunities provided to us by our friends, donors and partners. These collaborations not only strengthen the educational experiences for our students but also improves the quality of research and service provided through the school.

Sincerely,
Cem Karacal, PhD
Dean, SIUE School of Engineering

Partnership with South Korea's Tongmyong University Helps Students Learn From Students

Students and faculty of Tongmyong University's School of Engineering in Busan, South Korea, enjoyed exploring campus during a three-day visit to SIUE. The visiting scholars, who work in conjunction with SIUE as part of a 2+2 dual diploma program, embraced the opportunity to learn about a different educational culture.

SheCode Inspires Future Computer Scientists

School of Engineering alumnae and current students used their love for technology to inspire local middle and high school girls to consider a future in computer science during the SheCode event in December. During the event, participants worked with a team of peers and a mentor to create a mobile application.

Engineering Students Named IEEE Black Box Competition Champions

Three teams comprised of School of Engineering students achieved two first place finishes and a runner-up award during the 2017 Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Saint Louis Section Black Box competition.

Senior Corwin Fritts took first place in the analog competition and won a $500 prize. Fellow senior Justin Haque earned $300 for his second-place finish. In the digital category, seniors Tyler Friedel and Kaleb Cole secured a $500 first place prize.

NSF Funds Acquisition of Cutting-Edge Motion Capture and Analysis System

SIUE will soon house the first comprehensive motion capture and analysis system (MCAS) to serve the Southwestern Illinois and Eastern Missouri area, through a $185,358 grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation program.

A multidisciplinary team of faculty members from the SIU System are collaborating on the proposed project. This innovative system will be a core research and educational platform for complex body movement analysis in medicine, sports and occupational safety.
