Greetings from the Dean

Each year the School of Engineering hosts an awards banquet to celebrate academic excellence, service and leadership for students, faculty and alumni. I invite you to join us for the 11th Annual Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 in the Meridian Ballroom of the Morris University Center. The evening features a keynote speaker, dinner, awards presentation and cash bar. For ticket information and to RSVP please call 618-650-2541. We look forward to seeing you then!

While on campus, I hope you’ll be sure to take a look at the construction underway on our new Student Design Center. Work began on Phase 1 of the project during the fall 2016 semester.

Meanwhile, our total enrollment reached another record high this year. Our growth, along with new accomplishments of our students and faculty, assures us we are on the right track to become one of the best engineering schools in the area. I hope you enjoy reading about what has been happening in the School of Engineering.

Sincerely,
Cem Karacal
Dean

Students Design Enhanced Heat Storage System

For those who dread their winter heating bill, a more affordable, green solution may be around the corner. This fall’s senior design presentations from the Department of Mechanical Engineering included the Solar Owl, a heat storage system that collects free thermal energy from the sun.

Computer Science Hosts Successful weCode Event

More than 60 high school students were introduced to beginner programming during the inaugural weCode event hosted on Saturday, Dec. 3 by the Department of Computer Science. The tutorial workshop was free and offered students the opportunity to work in teams, under the direction of a mentor, to create a programming project of their design.

SIUE Strengthens Global Partnership with South Korea’s Tongmyung University

SIUE hosted a delegation from Tongmyong University (TU), of Busan, South Korea, in December, during which administrators from the two institutions discussed expanding their strong academic collaborations. A partnership between the institutions started in 2014 when a formal agreement was made to offer a 2+2 dual diploma program between TU and the School.

Students Awarded at IEEE Black Box Competition

Three teams of engineering students from SIUE proudly represented the School of Engineering when they earned two second place spots and one third place award at the 2016 Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) St. Louis Section Black Box competition held in November.
