Greetings from the Dean

This is my last newsletter message to you as the Dean of the School of Engineering as I am retiring at the end of the year after 33 years of service to SIU. I would like to convey my heartfelt thanks to all of you who contributed to the success of the School during my tenure as Dean for the last 10 years of my career.

We have worked collectively and industriously to elevate our School to the level it deserves to be. We became students’ first choice of engineering schools in the region. Enrollment increased 60 percent. The average math ACT score of the freshman class reached 29. We hired outstanding faculty members, pioneered many innovative academic programs, built a new annex, and most importantly – our graduates became highly sought-after individuals by industry.

The growth continues. We are currently working on a Student Design Center. Our bachelor's of mechatronics and robotics program will begin fall 2016. We are developing a master's program in biomedical engineering, and much more!

Associate Dean Cem Karacal will now carry the flag as the Interim Dean of the School and will continue to work diligently and collaboratively with our dedicated faculty and staff to ensure the success of our ongoing projects. I have no doubt the School will continue to excel and shine.

I wish you and your families happy and safe holidays.

So long,
Hasan Sevim
Dean

Students to Make Winters Warmer and Summers Cooler for Beverly Farm Residents

Residents of Beverly Farm, an assisted living center in Godfrey, will soon have a new heating and cooling system installed in their building, courtesy of engineering students' prowess. SIUE's student branch of the American Society for Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) was given the opportunity to pioneer a Community Sustainability Project in cooperation with the St. Louis Chapter of ASHRAE.

School Adds Mechatronics and Robotics Degree

In August, the Illinois Board of Higher Education approved the School of Engineering to add a bachelor’s program in mechatronics and robotics engineering. Though the discipline is well-known internationally, SIUE is the first university in Illinois and all surrounding states to offer the program.

Find out more about how the new program will produce highly qualified, cross-disciplinary engineering professionals.

SIUE Engineering Students Capture Aerial Views of ā€˜eā€™ in Space

Engineering students captured stunning aerial images showing SIUE's signature ‘e’ flying 20 miles above Earth. The team, inspired by a similar venture demonstrated online, used a weather balloon attached with GoPro cameras and assorted instrumentation to capture the photos and video.

Learn more about the student team's dedication and determination on this project.

School of Engineering Receives ABET Reaccreditation

The School of Engineering’s programs have received continued accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) through as far as 2021. The rigorous process requires years of data collection and continuous improvement based on self-assessment. The School and each program do a comprehensive self-study, which is followed by a campus visit from a highly trained team of experts.

SIUE Boasts an All-Time Record High Student Enrollment

SIUE has exceeded its own previous record-breaking student enrollment by a two percent increase over last year. The University registered an all-time high of 14,265 students for the fall 2015 semester. Overall enrollment leaped by 293 students. The School of Engineering experienced a five percent increase in enrollment, welcoming 75 new students.
