Acknowledging and Addressing Cultural Trauma in Social Work Practice – 3 CEUs

July 24, 2020   9am to Noon

Presenter:  Kimberly Carter, PhD, MSW, SIUE Faculty, Department of Social Work

This professional development session will help participants further understand the concept of ‘Cultural Trauma’ so that they can consider its impact on social work practice. Empirically proposed by Jeffrey Alexander and colleagues (2004) and based on a humanistic framework, ‘Cultural Trauma’ is a practice concept that considers disruptions that occur at the individual and group level, when ‘original’ cultural mores are encroached upon, disembodied, and/or threatened by a dominant or arriving culture. Session Objectives are as follows:

  • Enhanced understanding of what ‘Cultural Trauma’ is and an improved understanding of how it impacts human behavior and identity;
  • Enhanced understanding of historically informed factors (individual, systemic, and social) that contribute to cultural trauma;
  • Enhanced ability to identify pathways between cultural trauma, psychological trauma, and behavior;
  • Enhanced understanding of trauma-care approaches that address the impact of cultural trauma and enhanced ability to implement these modalities.
