Mass Communications Alumni Night Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Professor Bill Ward

On April 22, more than 70 mass communications alumni, friends, faculty, and retirees gathered in the Dunham Hall TV Studio to celebrate the life and legacy of Professor Bill Ward. Among those in attendance were Ward’s wife, Julie, and son, Jeff. Alumni Bill Plaschke and Paige St. John shared fond memories of Ward and the impact he has had on their careers. The evening was full of memories, laughter and celebrations for the bright future of this department. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Gregory Budzban announced the launch of a fundraising campaign in support of a Mass Communications Media Integration Lab.

To provide our students with the greatest learning environment possible, we are creating a digital media integration classroom to enhance our mass communications  programs and offer improved technological experiences. As we reshape the physical space, our faculty are developing a new curriculum to accompany these technology upgrades. These courses will connect students to the expanding world of media convergence in the workforce.

In keeping the tradition of excellence and high standards that were so heartily embraced by Professor Ward, we plan to have this room serve as visual representation of his service to the department. Providing such a space and advanced technology will further develop the professional, interpersonal and creative skills of our students. Helping students develop these skills was very important to Bill. A plaque commemorating Bill’s dedication to the department will be permanently placed in this space to remind faculty and students of the hard work and dedication that are required to be in the mass communications field. Our alumni have been clear that they want this space to both serve the needs of the department and celebrate the life of their beloved professor. Gifts to this project may be made in memory of Professor Ward.

For more information on making a gift, contact Laura Caveny, Director of Development, at 618-650-5048 or lhoppin@siue.edu.

*Gifts to this project are made to the Mass Comm Lab Development Fund
