SIUE Mourns Passing of CAS’ Alan Shiller
Alan Shiller, of O’Fallon, Mo., and an instructor in the Department of Speech Communication within SIUE’s College of Arts and Sciences, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, of natural causes. He was 62.
For more than 30 years, Shiller taught speech communication courses at the university level. He earned a bachelor’s from Emerson College in Boston. After earning a master’s at Purdue University, he accepted a faculty appointment at the University of Georgia. In 1980, he accepted an offer as an assistant professor at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo.
Schiller joined the SIUE faculty in 1999 teaching Oral Argumentation Skills, Nonverbal Communication, Interviewing, Strategies for Teaching Speech, Interpersonal Communication and Public Speaking. He received SIUE’s 2001 Outstanding Professor of the Year award.
Arrangements are being managed by The Baue Funeral and Memorial Center in St. Charles, Mo. Visitation at Baue will be held 4-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014. Funeral service at Baue will be noon, Thursday, Jan. 2.

David Lee Bauser, 60, of Brighton, died Nov. 29.
Bauser graduated from SIUE in 1975 with a bachelor’s in journalism.

Theresa Newby Harpole, 46, of Alton, died Nov. 28 at her home.

Drury graduated from SIUE with a bachelor’s in government.

Raymond E. Switzer III, 76, of Maryville, died Nov. 14 at his home.
Switzer was a personal friend and aid to the late Sen. Sam Vadalabene, for whom the SIUE Vadalabene Center was named. In 1967, he helped build SIUE, retiring in 1985.

Dr. James E. Benjamin, 79, of Glen Carbon, died Sunday, Nov. 17 at Relais Bonne Eau Hospice in Edwardsville.
Benjamin taught in the SIUE School of Business from 1972 until his retirement from the institution in 1992.

Ronald Paul George, of Shiloh, died Sunday, Nov. 12, at his home. He was 66.
An O’Fallon native, George earned a bachelor’s at SIUE and worked in corporate accounting in the St. Louis area. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era.

Debora Daugherty-Henderson, of O’Fallon, died Friday, Oct. 11. She was 54.
She was studying accountancy in the SIUE School of Business.

Betty J. Walker, 85, formerly of Fairview Heights, died Oct. 2 in Red Bud.
She was an emeritus assistant professor of Nursing at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. During her tenure at SIUE, her obituary states she also served as director of the Continuing School of Nursing Education and was a member of Sigma Theta Tau.

Norma Louise Clark Cadwell Judkins, 89, of Savannah, Ga. died Oct. 1.
Judkins was an instructor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Samuel L. Smith, 86, of Edwardsville, died Sept. 21 at his home.
Smith retired from SIUE in 1998 after 25 years. He served as the director of University News Services for 23 years.

Kayla Satterfield, 1992-2013; Was SIUE Student
Kayla L. Satterfield died Friday, Aug. 30, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese. She was 20.
A Belleville native, Satterfield was transferring into SIUE after graduating from Kaskaskia College.

Kevin A. Johnson, 1968-2013; Was SIUE Professor of Chemistry
Dr. Kevin A. Johnson died June 24, 2013, unexpectedly while traveling on vacation in Manila, The Philippines. He was 44.
Johnson earned a bachelor’s in environmental toxicology in 1992 from the University of California at Davis. He achieved a doctorate in environmental toxicology in 1996 from Clemson University.
Johnson became a faculty member in SIUE’s Department of Chemistry in 1997, rising to the rank of professor in 2008. In addition to mentoring SIUE undergraduate and graduate students, he also served in a number of administrative capacities: associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences from 2006-2010; interim director of the Center for STEM from 2009-2010; and director of the Environmental Sciences Program from 2010-2013.

Frederick Zurheide, 1934-2013; Was SIUE Professor of Physics
Frederick William Zurheide, IV, 78, passed away on Thursday, August 15, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was 78.
Born in Coles County, near Humboldt, Mr. Zurheide was a graduate of Mattoon High School. He attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Washington University in St. Louis, before becoming an associate professor of physics at SIUE for 42 years He retired in 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River. Committal services will be at 2:15 p.m. today at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Mattoon with burial to follow.

SIUE Mourns Passing of Paul Maynerich
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville community today is mourning the death of undergraduate student Paul Maynerich, who passed away Tuesday in an automobile accident.
A native of Virden, the 19-year-old Maynerich was about to enter his sophomore year in the School of Education.
Counseling services are available to students by calling 650-5666 or visiting the Counseling Health Services Office in the Student Success Center lower level adjacent to the Morris University Center.
Prayer service will be at 2:45 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Church in Virden followed by visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. at the church. There will be a one hour visitation prior to the 11 a.m. funeral Mass on Saturday Aug. 17, at St. Joseph The Worker Church in Chatham.

George L. Smith; 1919-2013, Was Staff Assistant at East St. Louis Center
George L. Smith, of St. Louis, Mo., died July 26. He was 94.
Mr. Smith worked for SIUE for 15 years at the East St. Louis Center. He worked most recently as a staff assistant at the SIUE East St. Louis Center.
He also was a retired senior customs inspector for the U.S. Department of Customs and Computers. He was past president of the Musicians Local #197.

Rosemary Githinji, 1985-2013; Was Alumna and Editor at The Alestle
Rosemary “Rosie” Wanjiru Githinji, 28, of Kokomo, Ind., died Tuesday, July 23. She was 28.
Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Githinji was a reporter and the opinion/managing editor at The Alestle, SIUE’s student newspaper. She also was an active member of the University’s student body.
Githinji graduated in 2011 from SIUE with a bachelor’s in mass communications. At the time of her death, she was working as the city beat reporter for the Kokomo Perspective newspaper in Indiana.
The first of two visitation services will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Farina Methodist Church in Farina, Ill. The second service will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at Farina Methodist Church.

Barbara J. DeLong, 1934-2013; Former Prof. in Dept. of Health, Recreation & Physical Education
Barbara Jane DeLong, of Bradenton, Fla., died Sunday, June 30, at Bradenton Health Care. She was 79.
A Fort Branch, Ind., native, DeLong achieved both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Health and Physical Education at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She earned a doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1967. She became a professor at SIUE in the department of Health, Recreation and Physical Education in 1970 and later served as chair of the department for a year.
During her tenure at SIUE, she also served a term as president of the Faculty Senate and, with two other department faculty members, helped found the program of intercollegiate athletics for women.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Branch. Shannon Funeral Home in Bradenton handled the arrangements. Ratliff, who worked a total of 13 years at the University, worked most recently for the National Corn-To-Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) at SIUE. An SIUE alumna, Ratliff earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University.
A memorial visitation will be conducted from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville, where arrangements were made. The celebration service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Emily Suzanne York, of Troy, Ill., died Thursday, June 13, at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. She was 34.
A McLeansboro, Ill., native, York joined the SIUE admissions staff in 2002 and was an assistant director of admissions for new student programs. She worked in admissions through July 2009.
York earned a master’s in speech communication from SIUE in 2004. She is the daughter of Pat Connaway, who retired from SIUE on May 31 to care for her daughter.

Orville “Sonny” J. Darr Jr., passed away on Sunday, June 9, at Alhambra Care Center. He was 83.
An Alton native, Darr worked in facilities and maintenance at SIUE.

Donald L. Hastings, Jr., 61, of Edwardsville, died Saturday, June 1, at Relais Bonne Eau Hospice Home in Edwardsville.

SIUE Mourns Loss of William Dupree
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville community is mourning the death of undergraduate student William Aaron Dupree, who lost his life in a domestic dispute on Sunday, May 26 in St. Louis.
The 32-year-old Dupree was a semester away from graduating from SIUE with a bachelor’s in criminal justice from the College of Arts and Sciences. He was a U.S Army veteran and most recently worked for the St. Louis County Department of Corrections as a correctional officer.
Dupree is survived by his parents, Patricia and Billy Adams; fiancée Paulette McCoy; grandfather Robert Brown; and siblings Telly Dupree and Beatrice J. Adams. A complete obituary is available in The Alton Telegraph.

Julia J. (Stallard) Gude, age 73 of Glen Carbon, IL, died at 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.
She was born in Tulsa, OK on Thursday, February 22, 1940, the daughter of Ellis and Yvonne (Lambiotte) Stallard.
Survivors include two sons, Erick K. (Natalie) Gude of San Diego, CA, and Daniel J. (Mary) Gude of Sanoma, CA; a daughter, Suzanne E.
(Peter) Morris of Napa, CA; two sisters, Dianne E. (Sam) Funkhouser of Highland and Sylvia Brandt of Edwardsville. Julia is also survived by her partner of 32 years Michael Hanei; three nephews: Greg, Chris, and Mike Brandt; and one niece, Connie Hunter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Frederick Gude. Visitation will be on Friday, June 7, 2013 at Sunset Hill Funeral Home in Glen Carbon from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m.

Chuck Brazier, 1929-2013; Was SIUE Electrician
Charles “Chuck” Brazier, of Edwardsville, died Friday, May 24, at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon. He was 83.
An Akron, Ohio, native, Brazier was an electrician at SIUE for 32 years. He retired in 1991.

Col. Charles B. Schweizer, 99, of Edwardsville, died Sunday, May 12.
Schweitzer, along with his late wife, Eleanor, was an avid SIUE supporter and fundraiser. He established the SIUE Foundation and served for 10 years as its executive director, and endowed a Meridian Scholarship and other scholarships.
A visitation will take place from 4:30-7 p.m. Friday, May 17 at the Weber & Rodney Funeral Home, 304 North Main in Edwardsville. During that time there will be a Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) ceremony at 6:30 p.m. and a Masonic ceremony at 7 p.m. in his honor. Funeral services will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 406 Hillsboro Ave. in Edwardsville at 1 p.m. Saturday. A private burial service will follow at Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis, with military honors.

Cameron Meredith, Ph.D., 1916-2013; Was Professor Emeritus
Cameron W. Meredith, Ph.D., 96, of Godfrey, died at his residence Friday, March 29. He was a professor emeritus at SIUE.
Dr. Meredith joined the SIUE faculty in September 1959. During his tenure with the University, he was a dean of education, a director of state and national services, assistant to the vice-president for area and international services and a professor of educational psychology. He also taught in the counselor education department before retiring in 1980.

Edward Dour, 1926-2013; Worked at SIUE as painter foreman
Edward L. Dour, 87, of Staunton, died at his residence Friday, March 29.
Dour worked for many years on the SIUE campus as a painter foreman.

Boulton Miller, 1916-2013; Emeritus Professor of Business
Dr. Boulton Bainbridge Miller, of Greenfield, Ill., died Friday, Feb. 15. He was 97.
Miller attended Kemper Military School prior to enrolling at the University of Illinois where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1937. He remained in the Army until 1964 and earned two degrees from George Washington University and a doctorate from American University. Upon his retirement from the military, he joined the SIUE faculty in 1964. He organized and taught the first graduate course in information resource management. He retired from SIUE in 1986.
After leaving SIUE, Miller and his family relocated to Williamsburg, Va., where he continued to teach at The College of William & Mary. In 1991, Miller and his wife moved to Wichita, Kan.
Miller’s wife, Marian, passed away in 1995. His survivors include daughters Bonita Cummings of Warrenville, Ill., Michele Meadors of Yorktown, Va., Marla Hayden of Wichita, Kan., six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Cpl. Aaron J. Ripperda,1987-2013; Was Former SIUE Student, Marine
Cpl. Aaron J. Ripperda, 26, of Marine, died March 18 in Hawthorne, Nevada.
A corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, Ripperda was a former Southern Illinois University Edwardsville student.
Memorials can be made to the Wounded Warriors or Injured Marine Semper Fi fund. Visitation is scheduled from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday and 8-9 a.m. Wednesday at Meridith Funeral Home in Highland. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Carlyle. A full obituary is available online.
SIUE Mourns Passing of Tifani Wilder
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville community today is mourning the death of undergraduate student Tifani Wilder, who passed away Thursday in her family housing residence in Cougar Village.
The 24-year-old Wilder was found by University Police and Housing staff after a welfare call was made. The death does not appear to be suspicious but is currently under investigation by the SIUE Police Department and the Madison County Coroner’s Office.
Wilder was a junior psychology major in the SIUE School of Education. She has a five-year-old son.
Counseling services are available to students by calling 650-5666 or visiting the Counseling Health Services Office in the Student Success Center lower level adjacent to the Morris University Center. A counselor also will be available in the Cougar Village Commons Building.

Marjorie Vandegrift, 1925-2013; Was SIUE Chancellor’s Mother
Marjorie Vandegrift, 87, originally from Jersey City, New Jersey, died Feb. 28 in Prescott Valley, Arizona. She was the mother of SIUE Chancellor Emeritus Vaughn Vandegrift.

Fayth M. Finley, 1978-2013; Was former SIUE student
Fayth M. Finley, 34, of Pontoon Beach, died Saturday at Alhambra Care Center in Alhambra. She was formerly an SIUE student.

Doris Franzi, 1929-2013; Was SIUE Employee for 30 years
Doris (Eberhart) Franzi, 83, of Edwardsville, died Feb. 20 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. She worked at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for 30 years, serving in several roles throughout the years.

Janice M. Landrem, 1941-2013; Was SIUE Employee
Janice M. Landrem, 71, of Staunton, died Thursday, Feb. 7. She was an SIUE employee for 20 years, retiring from University Housing in 2008.
A visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Baptist Church in Staunton. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton.

Larry McAneny, Former SIUE Dean; 1926-2013
Dr. Laurence Raymond McAneny, of Granite City, died Wednesday, January 30, in Silver Spring, Md. He was 86.
McAneny taught at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville from 1957 to 1988. He was Dean of Science and Technology for six years. He was instrumental in the accreditation process for SIUE’s School of Engineering.
Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Wojstrom Funeral Home and Crematory and continue Monday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Former SIUE Foundation President Robert Wetzel; 1937-2013
Former Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Foundation President and Chairman Robert A. Wetzel passed away Monday, Jan. 21, in Maryville, Ill. He became a member of the Foundation in 1982 and was a senior director at the time of his death.
Wetzel also was a founding member of the SIUE School of Business advisory board in 1994 and served until his passing.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Eden United Church of Christ, 903 North Second in Edwardsville. Visitation will continue from 11 a.m. until the service time at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Eden Church.

Pamela Bush, 1952-2013; Was SIUE Alumna
Pamela Bush, 60, of Bethalto, died Jan. 2. She was an SIUE alumna and wife of Associate Professor of Public Administration and Policy Analysis Richard Bush.
She worked for Riverbend Head Start and Family Services in Alton for 15 years, retiring in 2008. After retirement she served regularly as a substitute teacher, primarily for the elementary schools in Bethalto.

Ronald G. Kucharski III, 1989-2013; Was a Former Student
Ronald Gerald Kucharski III, 23, of Quincy, died Monday at Blessing Hospital in Quincy. He was 23.
Kucharski was a former Southern Illinois University Edwardsville student.
Visitation will take place from 4-7 p.m. today at Bethel Assembly of God in Quincy. Services will take place there at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Keith Garner officiating. Burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy.
