The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Department of Theater and Dance has created The Cougar Theater Company, dedicated to providing quality children’s entertainment for the general public.
The group will be performing an adaptation of Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the SIUE Metcalf Theater. This production, Searching for the Sidewalk, is a world premiere creative reimagining of scenes from Silverstein’s beloved classic. True to Silverstein’s poetry, this fanciful 45-minute production addresses many common childhood concerns through fun and imaginative storytelling.
Performing plays for children and teens, the Cougar Theater Company will draw inspiration from folk tales, classic stories, poetry, music and song. While the trappings of traditional theater companies include elaborate sets, props, and costumes, a peek into the back window of the CTC’s rehearsal room would reveal imaginative and highly adaptable costumes, props and set pieces.
CTC is simple, based on the collective creative abilities of the ensemble and spearheaded by director Wendy Greenwood, a speech and drama teacher in the Parkway School District and an alumna of the SIUE theater program .
