GI Bill Chapter 1606 (Montgomery GI Selected Reserve [MGIB-SR])

Program Information
MGIB-SR provides education and training benefits to members of the Selected Reserve (including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Reserves, and the Army and Air National Guards). Eligibility is defined by the Selected Reserve components, and VA makes the payments.
Eligibility Requirements
- You must meet the following requirements:
- Incur a six year Selected Reserve Obligation.
- i. If an officer, you must agree to serve six years in addition to your current obligation.
- Complete your IADT (Initial Active Duty for Training).
- Serve in a drilling Selected Reserve unit and remain in good standing.
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalency certificate prior to application completion.
- Incur a six year Selected Reserve Obligation.
- You will not be considered eligible if you:
- Elected to have your total service in the Selected Reserve credited toward establishing eligibility under the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty “2 x 4” program. However, if you obligate another six years in the Selected Reserve, you can be eligible for both the MGIB-AD and MGIB-SR.
i. The “2 x 4” program allows eligibility for the MGIB-AD with two continuous years of active duty and a four year Selected Reserve obligation.
- Elected to have your total service in the Selected Reserve credited toward establishing eligibility under the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty “2 x 4” program. However, if you obligate another six years in the Selected Reserve, you can be eligible for both the MGIB-AD and MGIB-SR.
- The following will suspend eligibility:
- Entering AGR (Active Guard and Reserve) status.
i. MGIB-SR eligibility can be resumed after AGR status ends, if you return to the Selected Reserve within a year. - Unsatisfactory participation.
i. If your component notifies you of failure to participate satisfactorily, your eligibility is suspended, and can only be resumed if the component determines satisfactory participation. - Receiving a Senior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (SROTC) Scholarship.
i. Under section 2107 of title 10, U.S. Code, you cannot receive both the MGIB-SR and SROTC program benefits.
ii. If you only receive a monthly stipend, you may still be eligible.
iii. If you are receiving a ROTC scholarship under section 2107a of title 10, U.S. Code, you can still be eligible.
- Entering AGR (Active Guard and Reserve) status.
Covered Costs
- Benefits may be used for college degree and certificate programs, co-op training, technical or vocational courses, flight training, apprenticeships or on-the-job training, high-tech training, licensing and certification tests, entrepreneurship training, certain entrance examinations, and correspondence courses.
- Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may sometimes be approved.

Timeline of Benefit Use
Generally, benefits can be utilized until either eligibility or entitlement (the number of months of benefits able to be used) ends, whichever comes first. Up to 36 months of entitlement can be utilized.
Application Process
- Find out if the program desired is VA approved.
- Complete application (online), VA form 22-1990, Application for VA Education Benefits, and submit it to the VA regional office.
- A copy that can be printed and filled out is available here.
- Ask appropriate institution or training official to certify enrollment to the VA.
Campus Requirements/Steps
- Obtain DD form 2384-1.
- Verify selected program approval for VA training.
- Complete VBI (Green Sheet) found in the Office of the Registrar (located in Rendleman Hall) on campus or online. This must be completed each semester and submitted to the Office of the Registrar each time.
- Obtain and complete VA form 22-1990 (Application for Student Benefits) and send it to the VA regional office of the state of intended training.
- Submit all documents to Bobbi Wojcik in the Office of the Registrar (located in Rendleman Hall).
- NOTE: If benefits are used at another institution, you must complete VA form 22-1995 instead of 22-1990.
