An alumna with two degrees from SIUE—a bachelor of arts in mass communications in 1997 and a master’s in public administration in 2004, Bethany returned to her alma mater in 2005. Before joining the University’s Marketing and Communications staff, she spent five years as a reporter for two daily newspapers—The Telegraph in Alton and The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus in Moline. As a reporter, Bethany covered a variety of subjects including entertainment, business, government and health, for which she earned a state and a national award. During her tenure, she covered the Iowa Presidential Caucuses, the U.S. Presidential race of 2000 and the 1998 and 2000 U.S. Congressional races for Illinois’ 17th Congressional District, as well as races for county and statewide elections. She also spent three years as a meetings and special events coordinator in the Medical Staff Services Department at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis. Bethany, who completed a fellowship at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Institute of Government and Public Affairs Journalism Fellowship program in 1998, assists SIUE Public Affairs Director Greg Conroy in serving the University community as well as local, regional and national media promoting SIUE’s mission, vision and values.
