John Mason Peck Hall is a classroom building that also houses several departments of the College of Arts and Sciences. Peck, founder of the old Shurtleff College, now the location of the SIU School of Dental Medicine in Alton, Ill. Peck, who founded several Baptist churches in Missouri and Illinois, traveled from New England with his family in a horse-drawn wagon to "bring the lamp of learning and the light of the Gospel" into the undeveloped West. In 1827, he founded a seminary near what is now O'Fallon, Ill., moving it to Alton in 1831.
