<h2>Library Instruction Basics</h2>
<h3 class="bodytext"><strong>Is Library Instruction Suggested for my Class?<br /></strong></h3>
<p class="bodytext">Some faculty feel that library instruction is something only for students in English courses. However, in today’s rapidly changing technological environment, the need for library instruction increases every day. If you can answer yes to any of the following questions, then you should consider incorporating a library instruction session into your class.</p>

<li class="bodytext">Do you give assignments that include library resources?</li>
<li class="bodytext">Do you have new students who do not know what the Library has to offer?</li>
<li class="bodytext">Do you have students who know very little about doing research?</li>
<li>Do you have students telling you they cannot find anything on their topic?</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Points for Consideration</strong></p>
<p>These are some points to consider before and after your Library instruction session:</p>
<ol style="margin-top: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in;" type="1">
<li class="bodytext">Use the <a href="/id0904f67a801f9364">Request</a> form to identify the type(s) and preferred date(s) of instruction. Contact a <a href="/id0904f67a801f93b2">subject librarian</a> if necessary. </li>
<li class="bodytext">Be specific about the skills you want your students to know as a result of the instruction session.</li>
</ol>

<li class="bodytext">Inform the <a href="mailto:ljackso@siue.edu,%20maschmi@siue.edu?subject=Information%20for%20Instruction%20Preparation">Instruction staff</a> of any resources or information that will be useful for preparation and presentation.</li>

<li class="bodytext">Provide the Instruction staff with copies of both the course syllabus and library research assignments prior to the session.</li>
</ol>

<li class="bodytext">Ensure that students know the assignment prior to attending the instruction session.</li>
</ol>
<ol style="margin-top: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in;" type="1" start="5">
<li class="bodytext">Plan to attend the instruction session with your class.</li>
</ol>
<ol style="margin-top: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in;" type="1" start="6">
<li class="bodytext">Schedule any follow-up library sessions (such as scheduled research time) with the Instruction Office. </li>
<li class="bodytext">Notify the Instruction Office of any follow-up visits or use the <a href="/id0904f67a801f939a" class="bodytext">Assignment Alert</a> form to assist us in alerting the Information Desk staff of upcoming assignments.</li>
