"Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation" Traveling Exhibition

The following free events related to the “Forever Free” exhibition are open to the public, as well as the University community, and will also be held at Lovejoy Library:

Sunday, October 21st  from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in Abbott Auditorium

   “Forever Free,” opening keynote presentation by SIUC Professor John Simon

Sunday, October 28th from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in Abbott Auditorium

   “Lincoln’s Pragmatic Proclamation: Abraham Lincoln and the Black Freedom Struggle,” lecture by SIUE Professor Stefan Bradley

Sunday, November 4th from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in Abbott Auditorium

   “Whitman on Lincoln and Emancipation,” lecture by SIUE Professor Jason Stacy

Friday, November 9th from 7:30-10:00 p.m. in Abbott Auditorium

   “The Massachusetts 54th” lecture by SIUE Professor Stefan Bradley, followed by the movie, “Glory”

Sunday, November 11th from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Library Lightwell

   “Music in the Time of the Civil War” by SIUE Professor Joel Knapp & 4 Choral Singers

Sunday, November 18th from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Library Lightwell

   “Dance in the Time of the Civil War,” by Dance Discovery

“Forever Free” is made possible by major grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, created by Congress and charged with planning the national celebration of Lincoln’s 200th birthday.  It is based on original documents about Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, abolition, and the Emancipation Proclamation in the collections of the Huntington Library and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and organized in cooperation with the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office.  Additional information about the exhibit, including related books, films, videos, websites, curriculum materials and programming ideas is available at
