This online dictionary of GIS terms is sponsored by the Association for Geographic Information and the University of Edinburgh Department of Geography.  The dictionary includes definitions for 980 terms compiled from a variety of sources and is supplemented by 52 diagrams.

Topographic Map Symbols, a publication of the U.S. Geological Survey, "explains the distinctive characteristics of a topographic map, explains how to interpret the map, and gives an explanation of the symbols used."

This site contains comprehensive references and links to:  map projection bibliographies and web sites, Petermann's Bar scale values, geographical coordinates bibliography, and a major city listing.  This site also includes projection zip files, prime meridians table, and relative measures table.  Links are included when available.
