    Session:  Drawing Students Out: My  Experience with Blogs and Wikis

Publicly available Blog and Wiki sites were used in part of the course to enhance student learning and encourage student engagement by allowing students to individually reflect on the classroom work in a weekly blog, and in a term-long wiki group project.  Student response to writing weekly blogs was overwhelmingly positive, and provided the instructor with information that could be used to make the classroom lecture more topical for te students.

In this interactive session, the presenters will demonstrate the use of Personal Response Systems (clickers) and Qwizdom Actionpoint (PowerPoint compatible) software. The facilitators will show how the use of clickers has increased energy levels in class while embedding valuable assessment techniques that enhance the students' and the instructor's assessment of learning.

    Session:  Online Development Program for Nurse Managers

Blackboard becomes a tool for professional development for nurse managers in a special program offered by the School of Nursing. Registered nurses from central and southern Illinois, who are nurse managers and those who aspire to such positions, can gain essential leadership and management skills through four courses (12 credit hours) taken in two semesters of online work and with minimal classroom time.

    Session:  Implementation of PDA Technology into an Undergraduate Curriculum

Presenters will discuss a project incorporating handheld (PDA) technology into the clinical setting for undergraduate nursing students.  Included will be a demonstration of PDA use as part of the curriculum, and a discussion of the technical and instructional support provided to students and faculty during the project.

    Session:  Use of a Web-Based Video Lab Manual to Enhance Chemistry Experiments

A web-based video lab manual of experiments has been introduced into chemistry laboratory courses at SIUE.  While doing each experiment, students view brief video clips of chemical procedures on wireless laptop computers.  The video lab manual enhances student learning and leads to higher success rates for experiments.

    Session:  Laser Scanner Applications in the Construction Curriculum

Laser scanners are used to rapidly generate detailed 3D models of the surrounding environment.  The Construction Department is incorporating its laser scanner into its curriculum for topics such as building information modeling, computer applications in construction, and surveying.

This session will explore how RSS-enabled technologies such as blogs, wikis, and podcasts can easily be integrated into classes to add value to the Blackboard features.  In addition, we'll look ahead to technologies expected to enter the mainstream of higher education in the next five years as outlined in the 2007 Horizon Report, released by the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI).
