Requesting a Course Shell
- New Blackboard course shells must be requested online each semester.
- The individual requesting the course must be the instructor of record in Banner.
- Please complete all blanks in the online form and be sure to use the Comments section to specify the e-ID of co-designers for the course, special start and end dates, and any other special instructions. If you are teaching multiple sections of the same course, please indicate whether you want all sections in a single course shell or indivdiual shells for each section. School of Dental Medicine faculty must include the SDM year of the students to be enrolled in the course (i.e. for first year students).
- Allow 5-7 business days for us to create your new course shell(s).
Logging into Blackboard
You can use Blackboard from any computer that is connected to the Internet.
- Open an Internet browser, and type in the address for Blackboard: http://bb.siue.edu. Users must begin the login process from that entry point; they cannot bypass that page and go straight to the login page itself.
- Username = your SIUE e-ID (the first part of your SIUE e-mail address), for example jsmith.
- Password = the same one used to access your SIUE e-mail
After logging in, you are taken to your My Blackboard page. This is your portal into all your Blackboard courses. A link to each of your courses is located in the My Courses box. You can return to the My Blackboard page from anywhere within Blackboard by clicking on the My Blackboard tab in the upper left-hand corner.

- Workshops -we offer comprehensive workshops that cover all of the basics of using Blackboard and its many features and tools. See the current schedule to sign up for a workshop.
- Tutorials - for those who are not able to attend a workshop or who prefer teaching themselves, we have web based and flash based tutorials. See the tutorial page for details.
Support
- Instructional Design - Not sure what to put in your Blackboard course shell or how to best utilize some of the Blackboard features? Contact one of our Instructional Design team members to get an evaluation of your materials. The Instructional Designers will work with you to adapt your current content for delivery in an online environment. Contact ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 to schedule an appointment.
- House Calls - If you have attended the workshops and tried the tutorials but still have a few questions or are unclear about something, schedule a house call. One of our staff members will come to your office and help you with any Blackboard issue.
