Blackboard is a course management system that allows students and faculty to share and engage in learning material while communicating with each other in a virtual learning environment. Blackboard is extremely flexible and offers many different capabilities. Faculty members can use a Blackboard site to enhance a course with online handouts and electronic reserves or to deliver a completely online course where the students never meet face-to-face. Thousands of SIUE students use Blackboard every semester with their courses; their favorite feature seems to be the online gradebook, which allows them to keep up-to-date with their courses progress.
