Who can submit an Interlibrary Loan request?

Current SIUE faculty, students, and staff.

When should an Interlibrary Loan request be submitted?

Items should be requested when the material is not available at SIUE. Please check the Library's holdings before submitting requests. Information Desk staff may be able to help you identify alternative SIUE-owned sources for the information you need.

How can I submit an Interlibrary Loan request?

You may submit your request using I-Share, the online request forms in ILLiad, or the interlibrary loan option available in many of the Library's online databases. You must be registered in the ILLiad system for the last two options.

Are telephone requests accepted?

No. Requests should be submitted using the online system. Interlibrary Loan staff should be called only if special processing of a request is required.

What type of information will be requested?

Complete and accurate bibliographic data about the item and personal information about you and your delivery preference will be requested. Incomplete or inaccurate information may cause delays in processing or denial of the request.

How long will it take to receive the material?

Typically, within 2 weeks except during very busy periods of the semester. Items that are not commonly held may take longer to obtain. Talk with ILL staff before submitting rush re quests (items needed in 3 days or less).

What types of library materials can I borrow?

Most library materials are available for loan from other libraries. Reference materials, rare and special collections, phono records, videos, CDs, DVDs and entire volumes or issues of periodicals are often not available. Textbooks used for current SIUE classes should not be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

How much does it cost?

Since the Library assumes most of the charges from lending libraries, usually there is no charge to you. You will be contacted for approval before an item is ordered if the costs are above those covered by the Library.

How will I know when the item I requested is available?

Interlibrary Loan will notify you according to the preference indicated on your request (telephone or email).

How and when must I retrieve my requested item?

Materials will either be placed on hold for you to pick up at the Library's circulation desk, or they will be placed on the ILLiad server for you to retrieve via the Internet.

Items borrowed via I-Share will be held for 14 days. All other items will be held until the due date. Unclaimed items are returned to the lending library one day following the hold expiration or due date. Unclaimed articles will be deleted from the ILLiad server 30 days after notification.

Can items be mailed to me?

Special arrangements to deliver material to users unable to come to the Library must be made with the Interlibrary Loan staff.

How can I check on the status of my requests?

You can check the status of your I-Share request by viewing your I-Share library account information. The status of your ILLiad requests may be reviewed in your user account.

How long can I keep material?

The lending library determines the length of time you may have an item. You are also subject to their overdue and fine policies. Failure to comply may result in suspension of your library privileges.

Can materials be renewed so I can use them longer?

Renewal information is displayed on the material. Requests should be made at least 3 days before the due date. Routine renewal requests are discouraged. Renewal requests may be denied by the lending library.

How do I renew the library materials I have borrowed through Interlibrary Loan?

Items requested through I-Share (those with blue book bands) may be renewed using the "My Account" renewal option. Items requested through ILLiad (those with white book bands) may be renewed by contacting the ILL office at 618-650-2048 or siueill@siue.edu.

Where do I return materials?

Interlibrary loan materials should be returned to the Library's Circulation Desk. Please do not return Interlibrary Loan items to the Library's book drops.

WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
