What is Granite City Association for the Protection of Animals?

Located in the woods just across the river from St. Louis, the Granite City APA is a "no-kill" shelter." That is, there is no time limit on how long an animal will be maintained at the facility, as long as it is physically or socially fit for adoption. The animals will not be "put to sleep" to make room for another. Rather, those accepted or rescued are given every attempt at adoption possible. Nor are the animals sentenced to a life in a crate, but are free to play and interact with others throughout the day.

What will the volunteers do?

Volunteers will socialize the animals (walking, playing, etc.). Volunteers may assist with the adoption process and help clean cages. The most important thing is that they show gentleness toward the animals and appreciate the role they play in life.

  • Participants need to wear suitable clothing and sturdy shoes.

  • Transportation will be provided.

  • Free-however, advance registration is required.

  • Sign-up sheets and further instructions are available at the Kimmel Leadership Center.
