American Red Cross Disaster Services

SIUE Student Leadership Development Program and Volunteer Services is collaborating with American Red Cross Southwestern Illinois Chapter to provide training in case of an emergency or disaster.  The training is free however.  Advance registration is required.  To receive a certification, all sessions must be attended.

            Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action      
            Introductory Course all new volunteers must take to attend any of the other sessions.

                        Saturday, January 30, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to noon

            Mass Care/An Overview  
            Course explains how Red Cross feeds and Shelters disaster victims.
                                                                                                3 Hours/Lecture
                        Saturday, September 12, 2009, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
                        Saturday, January 30, 2010, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

            Shelter Operations Workshop  
            Course explains how Red Cross sets up, manages, and closes a shelter    
                                                                                                3 Hours/Lecture
            Saturday, October 24, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to noon
            Saturday, February 13, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to noon
           

            Shelter Simulation      
            Builds from the Shelter Operations session. Workshop lets participants practice skills learned in that class.
                                                                                                3 Hours/Practical Exercise
            Saturday, October 24, 2009, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
            Saturday, February 13, 2010, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

            Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance   
            Instructs volunteers on how the Red Cross provides direct assistance to disaster victims.                 Volunteers learn to interview disaster clients and what assistance the Red Cross can be                  provided them.  This course provides a general overview of the tasks performed by Red                     Cross Disaster Assessment workers in support of a disaster relief operation and a local                   incident such as a single or multi-family fire.                      8 Hours/Lecture/2 Day course
            Saturday, November 7, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
            Saturday, March 27, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

            Damage Assessment Basic Class
            Fulfilling Our Mission must be completed before attending this session.  This session is                 held in the Kimmel Conference Room, 1st floor MUC.

            Saturday, October 8, 2009,  3:30 to 6:00 p.m.
            Saturday, February 18, 2010,  3:30 to 6:00 p.m.
