What is Metro East Weather Crisis Homeless Program?

The Metro East Weather Crisis Task Force was founded in May 2001 as a consortium of public/private agencies and programs that organizes and implements preventive, responsive, and follow-up measures to meet the needs of the Metropolitan East St. Louis area in times of weather related crisis.  The program is also responsible for services to the homeless in the streets.  Presently, the program is working in the downtown E. St. Louis, Illinois, area.

What Will the Volunteers Do?

Out in the streets of E. St. Louis:

Volunteers assist with preparing meals and hygiene kits.  Volunteers will also participate with distributing meals, hygiene kits, blankets, and coats to the homeless throughout East St. Louis.   Another aspect of the volunteer project is the social interaction with the homeless with greeting and time spent in conversation.

On the SIUE Campus:

The SIUE Homeless student group collect food and hygiene items for the homeless and have educational programs through the year.

For more information, contact the Kimmel Leadership Center at (618) 650-2686 or e-mail Michelle Sutorius  or Jairris Vermeire at SIUe Homeless [siue.homeless@gmail.com].
