Cherokee Nation 2005 Photos

Photos of Bull Hollow, White Oak, &  Oak Hill Piney, Oklahoma

The students completed a lot of work painting the inside and outside, stripping and waxing the floor, and staining and shellacing cabinets at all the Loyal Shawnee Tribal Headquarters.  The students also cleaned up the Loyal Shawnee Ceremonial grounds, cleaned the bathrooms, and performed a controlled burn.  The location of this work was around White Oak, Oklahoma.  Another group of students built a new roof on  the home of Cherokee elders and cleaned all the trash that had built up in their yard in the community of Old Cloud Creek (OCC).  The students accomplished this all in three days.

In the evening, we had the opportunity to share dinner and educational programs with various communities.  On Monday, night the Loyal Shawnee provided dinner and an over view of the Loyal Shawnee Tribe along with beliefs and customs.  On Tuesday night, we drove all the way down to Bell, Oklahoma, to dinner and a presentation of American Indian Pow Wow.  On Wednesday night, we had dinner with Old Cloud Creek community eating our favorite, Indian Tacos.   On Thursday, the group toured Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and the Cherokee Interpretive Center, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.  ( Many of the location listed here are not on the map.  To get to these location you turn at big green trash cans, goats, and through a creek.)

Plumbing was a constant challenge from the first night on.  Brad was taught by Don Greenfeather how to turn the water meter on an off so we had water at the Loyal Shawnee Tribal Headquarters.

These pictures are from the Tuesday evening dinner and Pow Wow down at Bell, Oklahoma.  The first picture is of the Southern type drum in the center of the picture.  The second picture is of the headwoman dance in her Cherokee dress. The students worked very hard and accomplished a lot.  I do not have any pictures at this time of the roof the students constructed at Old Cloud Creek.
