The Student Leadership Development Program has been completely redesigned for Fall 2012.  The new program offers greater flexibility and involvement levels.  As with the previous program, this program offers a wide variety of opportunities that complement the classroom experience. These opportunities can give you a competitive edge as you enter the work force or apply for scholarships or Graduate School. All enrolled SIUE students may participate in the program regardless of academic major or class standing. The Student Leadership Development Program is a completely free program. The program is designed to be completed at your own pace and according to your career interest. Students are encouraged to begin early in their academic career to receive the maximum benefits of the program.

Program Components

 

The Student Leadership Development Program now consists of three tiers (Bronze, Silver, and Gold).  Each tier requires the completion of 8 leadership modules and 10 hours of volunteer service.  Students may complete the modules in any order.

How to Join SLDP

The Student Leadership Development Program is open to all students regardless of major or class standing.  To enter the Student Leadership Development Program students must complete an application, submit a current copy of their resume, and complete a pre-assessment (the pre-assessment will be coupled with a post-assessment that will help us evaluate the program on an annual basis).  The application can be found here. Once we receive your application, you will receive an email with a link to the pre-assessment.  Students are encouraged to attend the SLDP/Volunteer Services orientation program held at the beginning of each semester (see the included schedule for dates)

SLDP Tiers

Bronze Certificate (Tier One)

Must complete four required modules plus four elective modules 

Required Modules:

• Professional Etiquette
• Effective Communication
• Conflict Resolution
• Cross Cultural Awareness (with service component)

 
Silver Certificate (Tier Two)

Must complete all requirements of the Bronze Certificate plus four required modules and four elective modules 

Required Modules:

• StrengthsQuest**
• Stress Management
• Ethical Leadership
• Civic Responsibility (with service component)

**Students must complete an online assessment prior to attendance at this session.  Students must contact the Kimmel Leadership Center no later than one week prior to the session to receive log-in instructions. 

Gold Certificate (Tier Three)

Must complete all requirements of the Bronze and Silver Certificates plus four required modules and four elective modules

• Dealing with Change
• Social Justice (with service component)

 The Leadership Development modules are presented by outstanding community, government, business, and University faculty and staff leaders to educate students on current issues and professional development. The modules scheduled each semester are interactive and thought-provoking, involving students in discussions and skill building activities.

Upon completion of a module, students will receive an email with a link to a module evaluation.  This evaluation must be completed within two weeks of module attendance in order to receive credit for the module.  

Elective Modules

Students may complete any of the elective modules for any of the tiers.  In order to offer the most current leadership topics the elective modules may change each year.

In addition to the modules, students must complete a total of 10 hours of volunteer service for each tier.  Volunteer service is tied directly to a module in each tier.  The Kimmel Leadership Center will provide students with a list of acceptable volunteer service opportunities that will fulfill the requirements of each tier.  Students may also have additional opportunities approved on a case by case basis.  Please contact the Kimmel Leadership Center for additional information.

How to exit SLDP

 

Students may exit the Student Leadership Development Program at any time (upon completion of any or all of the certificates).  To exit the program, students must:

• Complete the SLDP Exit application
• Submit an updated copy of their resume (students are strongly encouraged to visit the Career Development Center)
• Attend a structured reflection (see schedule for dates)
• Complete a post-assessment (will be completed at the structured reflection)

Dates to Apply for Completion

Exit applications must be completed by November 1 for fall semester and March 1 for spring semester.  Verification of completed volunteer service and module attendance will occur during the exit interview.
