| Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Student Government SR 2-07-1 Guiding Principles Regarding Division I Athletics |
| Whereas: | The Student Government is responsible to recommend on the allocation and use of student fees and |
| Whereas: | The State of Illinois has not been providing adequate assistance to Illinois public higher education in recent years and |
| Whereas:
| The student body is increasingly bearing the burden of the educational and non-educational expenses at SIUE as a consequence of inadequate state assistance. |
Therefore: | Be it resolved that the Student Government recommends the following guiding principles govern all decisions relative to the participation of SIUE in NCAA Division I athletics: |
| 1. Academic Mission - SIUE maintains education as its top priority by ensuring that financial resources for academic programs are not compromised for non-academic needs; |
| 2. Fiscal Responsibility – SIUE continues to be good stewards of student fees by ensuring that all fee increases are both necessary and well justified; |
| 3. Institutional Integrity – SIUE continues to protect the integrity of the institution by maintaining high academic and ethical standards in all programs. |
| Be it further resolved that the Student Government will actively participate in a productive manner in the subsequent decision-making processes that follow the reclassification to NCAA Division I.
Be it further resolved that the Chancellor establish the IAAC (Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Counsel) to serve in an advisory capacity to the Chancellor on all matters pertaining to Intercollegiate Athletics. The IAAC will include representation from Student Government, Faculty Senate, and Staff Senate.
Upon passage, this document shall become the official policy of the Student Government of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and be forwarded to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Narbeth Emmanuel, Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift, President Glenn Poshard and the Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees. |
