Kimmel Student Involvement Center Awards

Each April, the Kimmel Leadership Awards Ceremony is held to recognize and honor outstanding students, faculty, staff, and community members for their contributions in leadership and service.  A list of available awards can be found below.

Criteria is also available on each application.  All applications can be accessed on GetInvolved.SIUE.edu. Applications for all awards are due Friday, March 8 at 4:30pm.

Individual Awards


Outstanding Student Leader
The SIUE Outstanding Student Leader award is available to SIUE undergraduate and graduate students (undergraduate students must have attained at least sophomore academic status to be eligible) who have made significant contributions to the SIUE co-curricular experience through leadership and service.  Outstanding Student Leader candidates should:
  • Be involved in various aspects of campus life, including (but not limited to): student organizations, campus employment, and community service
  • Encourage the betterment of their organizations through their leadership
  • Encourage inclusivity on the SIUE campus
  • Nominees must have a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Nominees must be in good disciplinary standing with the Dean of Students office and the Kimmel Student Involvement Center

Outstanding Student Organization Officer

The SIUE Outstanding Student Organization Officer award is available to SIUE undergraduate and graduate students who serve as an officer of a registered SIUE student organization.  These individuals have gone above and beyond their duties to ensure the success of the student organization.  These individuals must be nominated by another member of the organization or an SIUE faculty/staff member.  No self-nominations will be accepted. 

  • Nominees must have a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Nominees must be in good disciplinary standing with the Dean of Students office and the Kimmel Student Involvement Center

Greek 360 Award

The SIUE Greek 360 Award will be given to an outstanding member of an SIUE fraternity or sorority who has also made substantial contributions to other SIUE student organizations and the campus community.  Two awards will be given, one to a member of an SIUE sorority and one to a member of an SIUE fraternity. 

  • Nominees must have a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Nominees must be in good disciplinary standing with the Dean of Students office and the Kimmel Student Involvement Center

Unsung Hero Award

The Unsung Hero award is available to SIUE undergraduate and graduate students who are a member of a student organization but do not hold a leadership role within the organization.  These individuals have gone above and beyond the duties of a regular member of an organization to ensure the success of the student organization.  These individuals must be nominated by another member of the organization or an SIUE faculty/staff member.  No self-nominations will be accepted. 

  • Nominees must have a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Nominees must be in good disciplinary standing with the Dean of Students office and the Kimmel Student Involvement Center

Adviser of the Year

Two advisers will be awarded the "adviser of the year" award.  A "new" adviser of the year will be selected from those nominees that have served as an adviser to their organization for two years or less.  An "established" adviser of the year will be selected from those nominees that have served as an adviser to their organization for more than two years.  The criteria and application is the same for both awards...just answer the question about how long the adviser has been with your organization...that will determine which category they fall into. 

The winning advisor for this award will have :

  • displayed significant effort for the improvement and forward progress of the organization.  Advisers should have:
  • Empowered students to take responsibility for their actions while providing advice, encouragement, and support to them.
  • Made himself/herself available to the organization throughout the year
  • Was open to new ideas
  • Served as a positive role model
  • Helped the organization reach its goals.

Emerging Leader Award

Emerging Leader Awards are available to emerging and/or consistently motivating undergraduate student leaders who meet the below criteria.

A student being nominated for an Emerging Leader Award must demonstrate the following:

  • Significant, positive growth in their leadership skills over the course of the semester/year and/or consistent and apparent implementation of their leadership talents
  • Dependability and dedication to an organization, team, or unit
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, and effective group interaction skills
  • Commitment to serving the campus and/or community
  • Be an example to their peers and/or the campus community
  • Nominees must have a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Nominees must be in good disciplinary standing with the Dean of Students office and the Kimmel Student Involvement Center

Organization Awards


New Organization of the Year

This award recognizes a student organization that was recognized over the last 18 months (from August 2017 to February 2019).  The organization will demonstrate a progression of growth throughout the year as indicated by their programming and membership. Along with fostering personal and professional excellence in its members, this organization will have had an impact on the SIUE community.

Organization of the Year

This award recognizes a student organization that has made major contributions to the University and community while significantly enhancing campus life. Awards will be given in two categories:

  • Organizations with less than 25 members
  • Organizations with 25 or more members

Organizations must be in good standing with the Kimmel Student Involvement Center to be eligible. This includes, but is not limited to, submitting registration paperwork, having no outstanding debts, and having no pending disciplinary actions against the group or its members.

Program of the Year

Student Organization Program of the Year applications will be accepted for the following categories.  You will select which award you are applying for.  This form may be submitted multiple times for different Programs/Projects. 

    • Social Program of the Year: The program that receives this award will be a social program sponsored by a student organization at SIUE that contributed to the broader mission of SIUE and encouraged students to interact positively with their peers and community. This program must have occurred on the SIUE campus.
    • Educational Program of the Year: The program that receives this award will be an educational program sponsored by a student organization at SIUE that contributed to the broader mission of SIUE and encouraged students to continue their learning outside of the classroom. This program must have occurred on the SIUE campus.
    • Diversity Program of the Year (Dr. Narbeth Emmanuel "We Are One" Diversity Award):The program that receives this award will be a diversity program sponsored by a student organization at SIUE that allowed a broad range of participants to experience and learn about diversity. The program will have a focus on developing understanding, tolerance, and acceptance. This program must have occurred on the SIUE campus.
    • Collaborative Program of the Year:The program that receives this award will be a program sponsored by at least two student organizations at SIUE that allowed participants to have a meaningful outside the classroom experience.  This program can be social, educational, or diverse in nature.  This program must have occurred on the SIUE campus.
    • Philanthropic Program of the Year:The program that receives this award will be a program sponsored by a SIUE student organization that served as a fundraiser or supply drive for a non-profit organization.  This program could have taken place on the SIUE campus or at an off campus location. 
    • Community Service Project of the Year: This award will be given to an SIUE student organization who completed a service project that directly benefited a non-profit agency, community, or individuals.  This project must have occurred off campus.

Scholarship/Community Awards


Kimmel Scholarship

The following selection criteria is required of applicants for the Kimmel Scholarship: 

  • Current enrollment as a degree seeking student at SIUE with sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate class standing.
  • A cumulative SIUE GPA minimum of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Demonstrated volunteer contributions within the last two years in leadership, service, and/or citizenship.  Evidence must include leadership in one or more  student organizations or at least one elected office in an organization, and more than 30 hours of non-paid service to a community agency or community organization.
  • A minimum of two current letters in support of documented University service and leadership from University employees, as well as a minimum of two current letters in support of documented community service and leadership from external community members.
  • In order for a student to be considered for a second Kimmel Scholarship, documentation submitted for previous Kimmel Scholarships will not be considered for the second scholarship.

The recipient of the Kimmel Scholarship will receive a plaque of recognition and an award of tuition for one academic year (two semesters) of full-time study at SIUE at the Illinois in-state rate.  If the recipient’s tuition is covered by other financial aid, then the amount equal to the tuition will be applied to fees, housing or other University issued educational expenses.  In the event that the recipient is entering graduate study at SIUE the term following the award, the award may be used for such a purpose.

Kimmel Community Service Awards 

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wishes to recognize community members who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer community service.

Eligibility/Selection Criteria:

  • Applicant or nominee must be a resident of Illinois or Missouri for at least two years.
  • Applicant or nominee must be eighteen years or older.
  • Applicant or nominee must have been a volunteer with at least one community agency, organization, or business for at least two or more continuous years.
  • Applicant or nominee must have demonstrated a variety of community service contributions over an extended period of time.
  • Applicant or nominee must have demonstrated outstanding voluntary community service.
  • Applicant or nominee must have demonstrated evidence of commitment to the citizens of Illinois or Missouri.
  • Applicant or nominee must document leadership roles and responsibilities assumed.
  • Only individual applications or nominations will be accepted; joint applications will not be accepted.
  • Only community service unrelated to the nominee’s job duties will be considered.
  • Posthumous nominations will be considered if the nominee passed away in the past twelve months.
  • Prior recipients are not eligible to reapply.

Applicants with service in a wide range of fields are encouraged to apply.  These fields include (but are not limited to):

  • Education - Volunteer community service contributions provided through early childhood education, primary and secondary education, or through higher education.
  • Social Service/Social Welfare - Volunteer community service contributions provided through social service agencies, social welfare agencies or organizations.
  • Environmental and Civic Betterment - Volunteer community service contributions provided through cultural arts agencies or organizations, historic preservation agencies or organizations, environmental agencies or organizations or through similar agencies/organizations.
  • Regional Leadership - Volunteer community service contribution through leadership positions in regional, or state agencies boards, committees, or organizations which impact the citizens of Illinois or Missouri.
  • Agency/Organizational Concerns - Volunteer community service contribution through leadership positions in at least one or two community agencies, boards, committees, or organizations which impact the citizens of a local community.
  • Special Populations - Volunteer community service contributions which directly support individuals served through senior citizen, youth, medical, or health related agencies or organizations.

The selection of the Kimmel Community Service Award will be made by members of the Kimmel Leadership Awards Selection Committee.  The Selection Committee reserves the right to make no award, if in its judgment, no entry warrants such recognition.This award is for non-students. Faculty and staff are encouraged to apply.
