The Kimmel Student Involvement Center employs full-time staff, graduate assistants, and student employees. Learn a little bit more about our staff below!

Kelly Jo Karnes

Kelly Jo Karnes
Director

Kelly Jo Karnes earned her B.S. in Elementary Education from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kans., in 1997 and her M.S. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas in 1999. Kelly Jo has worked in student activities and leadership programs at the University of Kansas, Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and most recently at the University of Iowa.

Kelly Jo served as the 2010 President of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA), and is a long-term volunteer for the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV). She is a Lead Facilitator for the LeaderShape Institute, and serves as a volunteer for her sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. Most recently, she has been named as a delegate for Tri Sigma to the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC).

Kelly Jo loves to read, travel, cook great food and watch college basketball! She also loves to spend time with her partner Harold, and their baby daughter, Harper Jo.

Michelle Welter

Michelle Welter
Associate Director

Michelle came to SIUE as a 17-year-old freshman in 1999 and hasn’t left. She never intended to stay at the University that long, but while an undergrad, she fell in love with the campus and the people at SIUE. While pursuing a degree in Political Science, Michelle was active in Student Government, serving as Student Body President during her senior year. After being accepted into law school, Michelle had a change of heart and decided that a career in Student Affairs was more her speed. She served as the graduate assistant for Student Organizations in Kimmel until she was hired full time in 2005 as the Assistant Director, Campus Life.

When not working, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband, Ryan, and their two sons, Jack and Carson. Michelle is a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan and can be found at Busch Stadium for opening day every year. (She has missed only one opening day in the past eight years — for the birth of her youngest son, Carson in 2012.) Michelle also enjoys baking tasty treats for staff meetings, debating politics, finding amazing things on Pinterest that she will never actually make, and watching ridiculous TV shows.

Sarah Laux

Sarah Laux
Assistant Director, Civic Engagement

Sarah Laux hails from Alton, Ill., and has lived in Illinois all her life, except the four years she lived in St. Louis while attending Saint Louis University. She graduated from SLU with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Psychology minor. Six weeks before graduation, she discovered her passion for higher education and student affairs and has never been happier or more sleep deprived. She graduated from SLU (again) with a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration.

Although a Billiken at heart, she is glad she can finally affiliate herself with a mascot that can easily be identified in the animal kingdom (Go Cougars!).

When she isn’t working, if there is such a thing, she can be found running, training for marathons, logging too many hours on Pinterest, shopping at Target, snuggling with her dog, Scout, and consuming too much coffee, dark chocolate, and peanut butter.

Andrea Keller

Andrea Keller
Assistant Director, Campus Life

Andrea received bother her Bachelor and Master's Degrees from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  While pursuing her Master's Degree at SIUE, she served as the Graduate Assistant for Student Organizations and Greek Life.  She started her career in student affairs at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO as the Assistant Director for Greek Life.  She just couldn't stay away and came back to SIUE as the advisor to Campus Activities Board.  Andrea joined Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. while an undergrad and has stayed actively involved ever since.
