Meet the Kimmel Staff

The Kimmel Student Involvement Center employs full-time staff, graduate assistants, and student employees. Learn a little bit more about our staff below!

Kelly Jo Karnes

Kelly Jo Karnes
Director

Kelly Jo Karnes earned her B.S. in Elementary Education from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kans., in 1997 and her M.S. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas in 1999. Kelly Jo has worked in student activities and leadership programs at the University of Kansas, Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and most recently at the University of Iowa.

Kelly Jo served as the 2010 President of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA), and is a long-term volunteer for the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV). She is a Lead Facilitator for the LeaderShape Institute, and serves as a volunteer for her sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. Most recently, she has been named as a delegate for Tri Sigma to the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC).

Kelly Jo loves to read, travel, cook great food and watch college basketball! She also loves to spend time with her partner Harold, and their baby daughter, Harper Jo.

Sarah Laux

Sarah Laux
Associate Director

Sarah Laux grew up in Alton, IL and graduated from Saint Louis University with a B.S. in Business Administration ('08), an M.A. in Student Personnel Administration ('10), and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration ('18). Before joining SIUE in 2011 as the Assistant Director for Community Engagement, Sarah had worked in the Office of Student Life, Center for Service & Community Engagement, and Department of Education at Saint Louis University and the Office of Admission at McKendree University. 

Sarah has been an active member of ACPA - College Student Educators International since 2010 and has served on several convention planning teams in various roles. 

In her free time, Sarah enjoys running, snuggling with her dogs (Hobbes & Scout), reading, watching documentaries, and consuming too much coffee, dark chocolate, and peanut butter.

Andrea Keller

Andrea Keller
Assistant Director, Campus Life

Andrea received bother her Bachelor and Master's Degrees from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  While pursuing her Master's Degree at SIUE, she served as the Graduate Assistant for Student Organizations and Greek Life.  She started her career in student affairs at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO as the Assistant Director for Greek Life.  She just couldn't stay away and came back to SIUE as the advisor to Campus Activities Board.  Andrea joined Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. while an undergrad and has stayed actively involved ever since. Andrea is an avid coffee drinker and you will often find her in line at Starbucks.

Tyler Manning

Tyler Manning
Assistant Director, Fraternity and Sorority Life

Tyler Manning has served as the Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life since June 2016.  Prior to joining the Kimmel staff, Tyler completed his M.A. in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education at Ball State University in May 2016 and worked in Ball State University's Office of Student Life.  Tyler graduated from Saginaw Valley State University (MI) in 2014 with a B.A. in Political Science and Criminal Justice.  He is a proud member and alumni volunteer of Sigma Pi Fraternity and currently serves as the Colony Director for the Illinois State University colony of Sigma Pi.

Alexa Bueltel
Coordinator, Campus Life

Alexa Bueltel grew up in Evansville, IN and attended the University of Southern Indiana where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Management in 2016.  Upon graduation, Alexa went on to further her education and graduated in 2018 with her M.Ed. in Higher Education—Student Affairs from Iowa State University. Alexa has enjoyed the opportunity to work with multicultural programming, family orientation, first-year experience, and honors. She is excited to work with the CAB (Campus Activities Board) Leadership Council to help enrich the student experience and contribute to the vibrant campus environment.  In her free time, Alexa enjoys spending time with her friends and family, watching movies, working out, traveling, and quoting/making references to her favorite TV show, “Friends.”        

Tyler Manning

Melinda Daniels
Coordinator, Leadership Programs

Melinda Daniels grew up in Milwaukee, WI, earned her BA in English Creative Writing from UW- Eau Claire in 2014, and graduated with her MS in College Student Personnel from Western Illinois University in 2016.  She has previous experience with leadership initiatives, volunteer services, residence life, honors, and diversity initiatives, and is excited to be able to focus in on all things leadership at SIUE. Her priority at work is to help students further develop into better versions of themselves. Melinda enjoys listening to music, learning new recipes, asking too many questions, and marveling at the beauties of the world, particularly elephants, donuts, and laughter. She also volunteers with Future Problem Solvers, Inc. and can often be found playing board games with her favorite opponent, her loving and supportive partner Ben. 

Vickie Sumner

Account Technician

Vickie Sumner is an Illinois native, born the same year as SIUE, approximately 20 miles east of the campus. Vickie is a DJ for WGEL in Greenville, Ill., a member of United for Others in Grantfork, Ill., and enjoys singing and playing the steel pan with SIUE Steel.

Vivian Rodgers

Vivian Rodgers
Office Support Associate

Vivian was born in a small southern town in Mississippi but raised in Washington Park, a small village right next to East Saint Louis. She has an Associate’s Degree from SWIC and is looking forward to continuing her education here at SIUE.

During her personal time, she loves live music (love the guitar solos), music of the ’70s/’80s, movies of the ’80s, all things Prince and Whitney Houston, and soft rock. She enjoys spending time with her family, her crazy but awesome friends, and her two beautiful daughters, Harper and Leah. She truly believes that the world would be a better place if everyone just loved a little more.

Stacie Colclasure
Office Support Specialist, Student Government

Stacie attended Lewis & Clark Community College majoring in Office Occupations and Business.  After a few years of living abroad she moved back to the Riverbend area and worked in a variety of business office settings, including two of her own businesses, before coming to SIUE.   Stacie is a self-proclaimed food critic and is always looking for a new recipe to try from her small “library” of cookbooks.  She is passionate about spending time with her family, nature photography, traveling, and hosting theme parties.    

Adana Robinson

Adana is a Louisiana native who is still wondering how she got to Illinois. Her educational background was so long ago that she doesn’t remember any of it, except that LSU was involved. Her hobbies include yelling at her kids, crocheting, browsing Pinterest, and attempting to cook without setting off the smoke alarm.

Brittany Buchanan

Brittany Buchanan
Graduate Assistant, Community Engagement

Brittany is a Chicago Heights native with a passion for serving others. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Saint Xavier University in Chicago with a B.A. in Clinical Psychology. During her undergraduate career, Brittany was involved in Campus Ministry, Residence Life, Student Life, Orientation, and Public Safety. Brittany is a four-time African American Achievement Scholar, Mercy Scholar, and O’Brien Medallion Scholar for her heightened academic and co-curricular involvement. As the Graduate Assistant for Community Engagement, Brittany wants to continue to connect students with fulfilling opportunities to serve and to amplify the voices of the marginalized and minoritized populations that she’s serving. In her spare time, she loves to eat Butter Pecan ice cream even though her body doesn’t agree with it!

Stephanie Bargiel

Stephanie Bargiel
Graduate Assistant, Cougar Cupboard

Stephanie, a Granite City native, has called SIUE her home for over 20 years. With humble beginnings as a kindergartener who attended art classes, she eventually earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and another in Biological Sciences; she is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Biology. During her undergraduate career, she strived to explore the issues surrounding homelessness, poverty, and food scarcity. She worked closely with Campus Kitchens and Alliance of Students Against Poverty. Her passion for serving also lead her to alternative spring break trips in New Orleans and Negril, Jamaica. She also totes an enthusiasm for public health; in her free time, she volunteers with various hospital and hospice agencies. She intends to practice her fervor for her community as a family medicine physician. She is continually amazed and grateful for the support of her significant other, family, and friends as she tramps a perpetually journey to a life well lived.

Lashata' Grayson

LaShata' Grayson
Graduate Assistant, Fraternity & Sorority Life

LaShata' is from Gary, Indiana with a major passion in helping primary and higher education students succeed. She graduated from Indianapolis University – Purdue University Indianapolis located in Indianapolis, Indiana with a B.A. in Management and Event Management. During her undergraduate career, LaShata’ was heavily involved in Black Student Union, Sounds with a Purpose Gospel Choir, Student Support Services, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  LaShata' is a former top 100 scholars, IUPUI’s 2016 Student of the Year, and Co-Founder of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) mentoring program (L.E.A.D). As a Graduate Assistant for Fraternity and Sorority Life, LaShata’ wants to make a change and impact for the students that she coaches and advise throughout the fraternity and sorority community. Being able to bridge the gap and connecting all four different councils for a greater purpose is LaShata’s ideal goal. In her spare time, she loves to work out and write on her “Fitting in Your Skin” blog about fitness, nutrition, and the overall struggles it is to become and stay healthy.

Brian Pearlman

Brian Pearlman
Graduate Assistant, Fraternity & Sorority Life

Brian is a graduate student at SIUE working towards his Master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration. He comes to SIUE from Charlotte, North Carolina where he got his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from UNC Charlotte. While at UNCC, Brian was involved in Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, the Interfraternal Council, GAMMA, and worked with Athletics. Brian is excited to learn about the culture at SIUE and the culture within the Fraternity and Sorority Community.

Alexis Lambert

Alexis Lambert
Graduate Assistant, Leadership & Student Organizations

Alexis is from Rockford, IL and is pursuing a Masters in the College Student Personnel Administration Program here at SIUE. Before coming to SIUE, Alexis completed a B.A. in Psychology at Eastern Illinois University. It was in her undergraduate experience, that she discovered her passion for student affairs. Heavily involved in multicultural groups, student life, residential life, and the admissions office in her own undergraduate career, Alexis is looking forward to helping others tailor their own leadership experiences to hopefully develop a passion of their own.

Of course leisure activities are few and far between, but when given the opportunity Alexis enjoys belting out her favorite songs very loudly, spending time with her son Brayden, and catching up on the latest episodes of trashy television with good friends.

Sharon Stewart

Sharon Stewart
AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator

Sharon is a Virginia native with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Watkins College of Art in Nashville, Tennessee. She’s currently pursuing her Master’s in Art Therapy Counseling at SIUE and is passionate about art and the opportunities it can provide to connect people with themselves and others. Some of her most meaningful experiences have involved providing art services for individuals in mental health and addiction recovery programs and curating art shows featuring the work of artists from marginalized populations to highlight their voices in the community. Here at SIUE she is excited to help students connect in meaningful ways through service. She likes to unwind by making art and spending time in Forest Park with her partner, Chris, and their two scruffy dogs.

Abigail Gnewikow

Abigail Gnewikow
Graduate Assistant, Campus Activities Board

Abigail is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration at SIUE.  A Wisconsin native and first generation college student, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.  As an undergraduate she was very involved in Alpha Xi Delta, the College Panhellenic Council and worked in the Financial Aid office.  She now serves as a Campus Relationship Manager for the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation and advises several campuses around the country on how to promote awareness and raise funds to remove global educational barriers for girls and women. When she isn’t consumed with work and studying she enjoys visiting with her friends, watching Law and Order SVU reruns, and eating Ben & Jerry’s The Tonight Dough.

Kim Pope

Kimberly Pope
Graduate Assistant, Campus Activities Board

Kimberly was born and raised in the Windy City: Chicago, IL. Kim graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Public Health and will continue her education at SIUE pursing a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Policy Analysis.  During her undergraduate career, she was able to build upon her leadership skills by  remaining  active  with  the student  body  by  joining  organizations such as:  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., leading the campus’ Black Student Union, and being a  member of the Red Cross Club. In Kim’s spare time, she enjoys quality time with family and friends, listening to music, and enjoying the sun with slushies. Kimberly has a warm heart and is enthusiastic about working with the Kimmel Involvement Center and the Campus Activities Board

Lauryn Joiner

Lauryn Joiner
Graduate Assistant, Campus Activities Board

Lauryn Joiner comes to SIU-E with the intellect and charm that she developed as a savvy southsider from Chicago, IL.  She is a proud alumna of LeMoyne-Owen College, the only Historically Black College in Memphis, TN. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Criminal Justice/Pre-Law and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Sociology. Lauryn was actively involved in many school organizations during her undergraduate career such as the W.E.B. DuBois Honors Program, a Resident Assistant, and a Peer Advocate .  She held executive positions in the Royal Connection and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. When Lauryn has a moment to relax, you can catch her watching a TV series on Netflix, playing cards, or at the bowling alley striving to get that illustrious 300 series!
