GradeMark is an online tool for grading papers.  Using GradeMark, papers submitted through Turnitin can be marked up with standard as well as customized grading marks.  While GradeMark itself does not analyze or identify spelling, grammatical, or citation style errors, if e-rater has been enabled during the Turnitin assignment creation process, e-rater will analyze spelling and grammar.

GradeMark can be utilized inside or outside of the Blackboard environment and does not have to be used in conjunction with the Turnitin originality reporting capability.  Consult this Tips and Tricks handout for an overview of GradeMark.  Consult the ITS Training site to register for an upcoming session on Turnitin and all of its components.

Instructors must first set up a Turnitin assignment in their Blackboard course to have students submit papers. In order to have Turnitin analyze spelling and grammar, the e-rater tool must be enabled during the assignment creation process.  Consult this tutorial for additional information: Turnitin Help Center Video: Creating an Assignment

Informing Students about GradeMark

When creating a Turnitin assignment to be graded using GradeMark, we suggest you incorporate the following information into the assignment instructions.

• Papers should be double spaced.  This will make it much easier for you to apply GradeMark comments and marks and for both you and the students to be able to read them.
• Students should be encouraged to remove their names and any other personally identifying information from their papers prior to submission to Turnitin if the assignment has been set up to added to the global Turnitin repository.  Instructors will be still be able to identify the students' papers via the Turnitin submission list.

Using GradeMark

GradeMark is a feature within Turnitin.  Therefore, you must create a Turnitin assignment within Blackboard in order to use GradeMark.  Whether you choose to use the originality reporting or not will be determined by your settings when you create the Turnitin assignment.  Once assignments have been submitted, papers can then be graded using GradeMark.  See the Using Turnitin within Blackboard or Using Turnitin outside of Blackboard resource pages for detailed instructions regarding how to set up a Turnitin assignment.

Viewing and Grading a Turnitin Assignment (Instructors)

Depending on whether they created the assignment inside or outside of the Blackboard environment, instructors will view the student's Turnitin submission and grade it using GradeMark in several ways:

Through the Turnitin Assignments tool in Blackboard

1. Under the Control Panel, expand the Course Tools section and select Turnitin Assignments.
2. Click on the linked name of the Turnitin assignment.
3. Click the pencil icon under the Grade column.
4. Click the GradeMark button in the toolbar at the top of the screen to access the GradeMark tools.

Through the Grade Center in Blackboard

1. Under the Control Panel, expand the Grade Center section and select Full Grade Center.
2. In the Grade Center, click on the far right side of the cell that contains the green box with a white exclamation point indicating that a student has completed a Turnitin assignment.
3. Expand the drop down box and select View Grade Details.
4. On the Grade Details screen, click on the Grade Attempt button.
5. On the Modify Grade screen:

1. Click the View button beside "User's Paper" in section 2.
2. Click the GradeMark button in the toolbar at the top of the screen to access the GradeMark tools.

Through the Turnitin site

1. Log into http://turnitin.com.
2. Access the appropriate course.
3. In the Actions column, click the View link for the Turnitin assignment.
4. Click the pencil icon under the Grade column.
5. Click the GradeMark button in the toolbar at the top of the screen to access the GradeMark tools.

Viewing GradeMark (Students)

Depending on whether the Turnitin assignment was created inside or outside of the Blackboard environment, students will view the GradeMark responses differently:

Through the My Grades option in Blackboard

1. Select My Grades in the left navigation column of the Blackboard course.
2. Click on the linked point value in the Grade column.
3. On the Review page, click the View button next to My Paper in the Assignment Materials area.
4. Click the GradeMark button in the toolbar at the top of the screen.

Through the Turnitin site

1. Log into http://turnitin.com.
2. Access the appropriate course.
3. Click the Show Details link for the Turnitin assignment.
4. Click the GradeMark icon next to the paper title.
5. Click the GradeMark button in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
