The Open Journal and Conference systems are developed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), which is a partnership among the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia, the Simon Fraser University Library, the School of Education at Stanford University, and the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University. The two systems are free software packages which are based on an open source platform. Each system allows for a large amount of customization which allows users to continually update and adapt their web sites overall look and feel.
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville iteration of the Open Journal System (OJS) was first introduced in the summer of 2008. Information Technology Services (ITS) hosts the system and provides technical support. The current system houses nine journals with a worldwide user base of over 1,000 active accounts.
