Known Issues

Occasionally, we have reports of issues involving Blackboard's interoperability with assorted browsers and various operating systems. Blackboard has acknowledged these issues and, in most instances, is working on developing fixes for them. At the same time, ITS is diligently collaborating with Blackboard and system administrators to work toward timely resolutions of these issues. The statuses of the issues listed below will be updated as we receive notification from Blackboard. If you encounter issues that are not listed on this page, please contact us so that we can notify Blackboard and begin developing solutions and/or workarounds. Thank you for your assistance as we strive to provide the best system functionality.

Current Issues

  1. Mixed content (http and https), generally associated with links to publisher content, is blocked in Firefox and Chrome.

  2. Microsoft Office 2007 and Mac Office 2008 files are not compatible with older versions of Microsoft Office.

  3. Browser Compatibility:"Navigation to webpage was canceled" error being generated by Internet Explorer.

  4. Turnitin Error 423.   Faculty report being unable to create or access an existing Turnitin Assignment (error 423) in Blackboard.

  5. Links in portfolios appear as plain text when viewed by those with whom the portfolio has been shared, rather than as clickable links.

  6. Instructors cannot reorder the links in their Blackboard course navigational menu using the drag and drop method.

  7. Assorted display issues in Blackboard when using Internet Explorer in “Compatibility Mode.”

  8. Grading feedback (e.g. rubrics, attaching graded papers) associated with a Blackboard Assignment is not immediately visible on the Grade Assignment screen.

  9. Discussion Board Threads are automatically marked as “Read,” when viewed in either “Tree View” or “List View,” simply by scrolling down the screen.

  10. Extraneous text “instructor.download.column.total” is added to column names when a Grade Center is downloaded to work offline.

  11. Instructors receive error messages when attempting to use Hot Spot question types in Blackboard tests.

Resolved Issues

  1. Students see a single course listed multiple times within the "Updates" global navigation.
  2. Discussion Boards can be accessed by students even when they are set up to “Display After” a later date.
  3. Student submissions to Discussion Boards, Blogs and Journals do not appear in "Needs Grading" when their post is saved initially as a draft and later submitted. (Resolved December 2013)
  4. Searching for Videos in YouTube Mashup incorrectly provides 0 results when the default search option "All of the Words" is selected. (Resolved December 2013)
  5. Content Folder descriptions automatically inserted additional line spacing and list formatting every time it was edited.
  6. The YouTube Video player did not load properly in newer versions of Chrome.
  7. Users reported being unable to access course material because they could not see the course navigational pane.
  8. Faculty were having trouble accessing Turnitin assignments via the Blackboard Grade Center due to an unannounced user database upgrade to SIUE's account, which reset all user agreements.
  9. Manually entered calendar items did not appear in the Calendar and consequently could not be located by faculty for editing or removal.
  10. Email sent from within the Grade Center sent a blank message to the recipient.
  11. The last student in the Grade Center was not visible to faculty when entering grades.
  12. Text copied and pasted from Word into Blackboard displays improperly or incompletely, particularly in Internet Explorer.  With service Pack 10 (installed in December 2012), Blackboard introduced a new text editor that now accepts text copied and pasted directly from Word.
  13. Students who allow their e-ID password to expire will find their email address falls out of Blackboard for up to 24 hours after they have reset their password. (Resolved March 2013)

These problems should no longer be occurring in Blackboard. Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you are still experiencing them.

1. Mixed content (http and https), generally associated with links to publisher content, is blocked in Firefox and Chrome.

Problem: Recent versions of the Firefox and Chrome browsers have been designed to automatically block web pages that contain both secure (https) and insecure (http) content.  ITS has seen instances where this automatic blocking has resulted in the inability to access some content, generally associated with links to publisher content, in Blackboard courses.

Bb Features Impacted:  Any feature that includes links to mixed content.  We have seen issues with audio players not displaying in tests with questions linked to a publisher test bank.  We have also seen instances where publisher content embedded through a publisher course cartridge would not display.  In addition, the creation of StudyMate Class activities by instructors and/or students is impossible until mixed content is allowed.

Workaround: Follow these steps to enable mixed content in your browser. (Instructions shared by Crystal Nielsen, Coordinator of eCampus Quality Instruction at Boise State University.)

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

2. Office 2007, Office 2010, and Mac Office 2008 compatibility.

Problem:   The latest versions of Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 as well as Mac Office 2008 create file extensions (.docx, .pptx, .xlsx) that are not backward compatible with older versions of Microsoft Office.

Bb Features Impacted:  Any course content area linking to a Microsoft Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 document, assignments submitted via the Assignment tool or the Digital Dropbox, and attachments submitted within Discussion Boards.

  • Faculty linking to Microsoft Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 documents in Blackboard will find students with older versions of Microsoft Office cannot open the documents.
  • Students submitting assignments as Microsoft Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 documents will find faculty with older versions of Microsoft Office reporting that they cannot open the assignment to grade it. Students attaching Microsoft Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 documents to Discussion Boards will find that at least some of their classmates will not be able to open the document.

In order to make certain that everyone can open and work with Microsoft Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 files, one or both of the workarounds must be used:

Workaround 1:  Those using Microsoft Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 must use Save as type: and select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc), Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls), or PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation (*.ppt) when saving their files.

Workaround 2:  Those receiving Microsoft Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 documents can download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack which will allow them to open and work with the Office 2007 or Mac Office 2008 files.

Note: Blackboard Service Pack 10, released December 2012, should have addressed this Microsoft Word compatibility issue. ITS will monitor user response over the semester to ensure the problem is resolved before it is moved to "resolved".

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

3. "Navigation to the webpage was canceled" error when clicking on a link to an external page.

Problem:   Users receive a “Navigation to the web page canceled” error when clicking on a link to an external web page using the Internet Explorer browser when users select "Yes" when prompted to respond to the question "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?"

Bb Features Impacted:  Any external web page link that was set to open within the Blackboard content frame. This issue only occurs when Bb is viewed with Internet Explorer and users specified that they only want to view the content that was delivered securely.

Workaround 1:  Use Firefox as your browser.

Workaround 2:  Right-click the link and select the “Open in New Window” option. The web page will open properly in a new window.

Workaround 3:  Log out of Blackboard.  Delete all of the browsing history in Internet Explorer (Tools > Internet Options > Browsing history > Delete).  Check all of the boxes except "Preserve Favorites website data" and then click Delete.  Log back into Blackboard.  Click on the link and when prompted to respond to the question "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?," click the "No" button.

Workaround 4 (for faculty): Modify the external link in Bb. Check the box “Open in a new window.”

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

4. Turnitin Error 423.

Problem:  Faculty report being unable to create or access an existing Turnitin Assignment (error 423).

Bb Features Impacted:  Turnitin Assignments within Blackboard.

  • Error 423:  This error generally appears to faculty attempting to create a new or access an existing Turnitin Assignment.  The error message indicates that the faculty's email address being sent from within Blackboard to Turnitin does not match the email record on the Turnitin servers.

Resolution:  The only way to resolve this issue is to submit a ticket to Turnitin.  Users can submit a ticket on their own or request that ITS submit one on their behalf.  In either case, it is essential to clearly outline in the ticket the faculty's correct email address, the incorrect email address being reported in the 423 error screen, and the course ID.  Turnitin requests 24-48 hours to resolve this issue.

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

5. Links in portfolios appear as plain text when viewed by those with whom the portfolio has been shared, rather than as clickable links.

Problem: Individuals with whom a portfolio has been shared can see the portfolio, but links to items in the portfolio owner's Content Collection appear as plain text, rather than links, making them inaccessible for viewing.

Bb Features Impacted:  Shared portfolios created within Blackboard.

Solution:  Follow these steps to fix the problem:

  1. On the My Portfolios page, hover over the portfolio title and click the drop-down arrow.
  2. Select Link Checker from the drop-down menu.
  3. Check the box in front of the folder(s) on this page. Click the Repair button.
  4. Click the OK button to confirm that repairs can be made to the links.

ITS submitted a ticket to Blackboard in January, 2013. Blackboard is aware of the problem and is working to resolve this issue in a future update.

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

6. Instructors cannot reorder the links in their Blackboard course navigational menu using the drag and drop method.

Problem: Instructors cannot reorder the links in their Blackboard course navigational menu (generally around the Discussion Board link) using the drag and drop method.  This issue most often arises after a course import.  Links appear to randomly “jump” out of order.

Bb Features Impacted: Course navigational menu.

Workaround:

  • At the top of the navigation menu in your Bb course, click the Keyboard Accessible Reordering: Menu Items button. (This button has both an up and down arrow on it.)  Bb keyboard accessible reorder button (arrows up and down)
  • On the Reorder: Menu Items submenu, highlight the name of the navigation item that needs to be moved.
  • Use the up and down arrows on the submenu to move the item to the desired location.
  • Repeat as necessary until all rearranging has been completed.
  • Click on the Submit button to finalize the new order.

Blackboard is aware of this problem and is working to resolve it in a future update.

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

7. Users cannot see the MyBlackboard, My Courses, My Content links in the upper right corner of the Blackboard screen when using Internet Explorer in “Compatibility Mode.”

Problem: Users report assorted display issues when using Internet Explorer in “Compatibility Mode.

Bb Features Impacted: ITS has had reports of an assortment of features being impacted:

  • Navigation among the My Blackboard, My Courses, and My Content links at the top of the screen is impossible since those links are not visible.
  • Only the first question in a Blackboard test is visible to students. A vertical scroll bar appears beside that question, but scrolling brings up nothing but a blank screen.
  • Students checking “My Grades” are unable to see all of the details for each assessment.

Workaround 1: Use another browser (e.g. Firefox or Chrome).

Workaround 2: Turn off “Compatibility Mode” in Internet Explorer. Visit the following URL: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-8. While those instructions are specifically for Internet Explorer 8, you can locate instructions for other versions of the browser by clicking on the drop down beside "Internet Explorer 8" in the upper right corner of the screen and selecting your specific version of the Internet Explorer.

Blackboard is aware of this browser-specific issue and has posted information about it on their web site.

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

8. Grading feedback (e.g. rubrics, attaching graded papers) associated with a Blackboard Assignment is not immediately visible on the Grade Assignment screen

Problem: Grading feedback (rubrics, written feedback, and attaching graded papers)  associated with a Blackboard Assignment is not immediately visible on the Grade Assignment screen.

Bb Features Impacted: Blackboard Assignment.

Workaround: All grading feedback is hidden from view initially.  Users must expand  the very narrow blue bar beneath the Attempt field of the Grade Assignment screen to  locate the links to the associated rubric, and then choose to either view it inline or in a new window, as well as to enter any written feedback and/or to attach a copy of the graded paper.  See the screen shots that follow.

Grade Center - expanded bar shows content

Blackboard is aware of this issue is working to resolve it in a future upgrade.

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

9. Discussion Threads are automatically marked as “Read” when viewed in either “Tree View” or “List View,” simply by scrolling down the screen.

Problem: Discussion Threads are automatically marked as “Read” as users scroll down the screen in either “Tree View” or “List View."

Bb Features Impacted: Discussion Board.

Workaround: For greater control over marking threads as “Read,” users should use the options at the top of the Forum screen to: 1) Select: All threads and then 2) click on the “Collect” button.

Discussion board workaround part 1

The Collection screen allows users to individually mark threads as they are “Read,” or to mark all of them after they have been read by using “Select: All” and then “Mark” as “Read.”

Discussion board workaround part 2

Blackboard considers this new behavior to be a product enhancement and has no plans to change it.

Please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500 if you need additional assistance with this issue.

10. Extraneous text “instructor.download.column.total”is added to column names when a Grade Center is downloaded to work offline.

Problem: When downloading the Grade Center to work offline, the download process appends “instructor.download.column.total” to the end of every column name in the download file. When the downloaded file is later uploaded back into the Grade Center that extra text is appended to every column name in the Grade Center in Blackboard.  This issue will occur every time the Grade Center is downloaded from and uploaded back into Blackboard.

Bb Features Impacted:  Grade Center.

Workaround:  Note, to reduce the workload required to clean up the download file, consider downloading a “Selected Column” rather than the “Full Grade Center,” particularly when recording grades for a single assessment.

After downloading the Grade Center file, remove the extraneous text from each assessment column in the Excel file prior to uploading it back into Blackboard.

  • From within Excel, click on the column header for the first assessment.
  • Highlight the text instructor.download.column.total
  • Right-click over the highlighted text and select Copy from the dropdown menu
  • While holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, click on the F key on your keyboard to open the Find and Replace window.
  • Click your mouse in the Find what box and while holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, click on the V on your keyboard. This will paste that text into the box.
  • Click on the Replace tab.
  • Click your mouse in the Replace with box and click the Delete key on your keyboard
  • Click the Replace All button.
  • Click the OK button in the notification box.
  • Click the Close button in the Find and Replace window.

Enter new grades into the appropriate column(s).  Save the file as a Text (Tab delimited) or CSV (Comma delimited) file, and then upload the file back into Blackboard.

Blackboard is aware of this issue is working to resolve it in a future upgrade.

11. Hot Spots

Problem: Instructors receive error messages when attempting to use Hot Spot question types in Blackboard tests.

Bb Features Impacted:  Tests.

Blackboard is aware of this issue and is working to resolve it in a future upgrade. To discuss alternatives for Hot Spot question types in Blackboard Tests, please contact ITS at ftc_help@siue.edu or 618-650-5500.
