Blackboard Collaborate

Bb Collaborate logo

Blackboard Collaborate is the name of a suite of web conferencing and voice authoring products that emerged after Blackboard purchased both Wimba and Elluminate and combined many features of both companies’ products.

ITS offers regular training sessions on Bb Collaborate. View a list of upcoming training and/or sign up for a session on the Blackboard Training page.

Bb Collaborate (Web Conferencing)

Blackboard Collaborate provides a web conferencing environment allowing moderators to upload and share PowerPoint slides, content on their desktop, and/or web sites with their students.  This includes full audio and video capabilities, public and private chat, as well the ability to poll or quiz session participants.  In addition to its availability for use in a synchronous online session, Blackboard Collaborate can also be used to record lectures for students to view recorded archives asynchronously.  Audio and video from these recorded Bb Collaborate sessions can be exported to a local computer or used externally with a variety of mobile devices and media players.

The Blackboard Collaborate Session Administration System (SAS) enables the use of the Bb Collaborate web conferencing tool outside of the Blackboard environment.

Voice Authoring

The Blackboard Collaborate suite includes a variety of voice authoring tools as well, including voice emails, voice (discussion) boards, voice presentations, and a voice podcaster.  These voice tools allow instructors and students to quickly and easily create audio files for podcasting, language learning, vocal exercises, or oral assignments. The tools can can also be used for creating audio discussion boards, sending a voice email, hosting an online discussion, or posting an audio announcement. Audio can be recorded directly in the different Voice Tools environments or, in most cases, be imported from an outside source. Audio from the Voice Tools can also be exported to a local computer for use with a variety of electronic devices.
