What is Active Directory Services?

Active Directory (ADS) is a Microsoft product that will enable SIUE technicians to implement university-wide computing policies and apply critical updates to university computers more efficiently. ADS and the policies it supports will make the SIUE computing environment safer and more secure for all of its users.

Why is SIUE Expanding its use of Active Directory?

Active Directory has been in use on the SIUE campus for several years and expansion to the entire university has been a long-term goal. Recent findings by the Illinois Auditor General have accelerated Active Directory implementation. These findings require that
(1) all users of university-owned or leased computers to sign in with a secure ID and password,
(2) all such users be automatically locked out from the computer after an idle period, and
(3) passwords be changed at a regular interval.

Active Directory is the tool we will use to meet the Auditor General’s requirements. The SIUE e-ID (email ID) is the secure ID we will use.

What are the benefits of active directory to SIUE Students, Faculty, and Staff?

In addition to satisfying the Auditor General’s user-authentication requirements, SIUE technicians will use Active Directory to ensure that University computers have current virus protection, a properly-configured firewall, and the latest Windows operating system updates. This will help prevent computer virus outbreaks and security breaches

How will Active Directory be deployed?

An SIUE technician will contact each unit to arrange for ADS implementation and to gather necessary information. SIUE technicians will then reconfigure every Windows computer in the unit.

What changes will computer users experience?

1. When you turn on your computer, you will be presented with a login screen. To access the computer, you must enter your e-ID and password.
2. After 20 minutes of inactivity (no use of the mouse or keyboard), your screensaver will be displayed and the login panel will reappear. You must login again to continue using the computer. You will be returned to the same program as before the screensaver was displayed: no program will be interrupted and no data will be lost during the login process.
3. Virus scanner updates, Windows updates, and firewall maintenance will be automatically applied.
