Graduate Admission Procedures for Students
in an English Language Program at ELS

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville offers conditional admission to qualified graduate-level students in select programs who are academically eligible for admission, but do not meet the English language proficiency requirement as measured by TOEFL or IELTS.

Students applying for conditional admission must study at ELS until they demonstrate sufficient English proficiency by successfully completing ELS Level 112 or by fulfilling another form of SIUE-approved English verification.
 

The following graduate programs will consider applications for conditional admission:

Biological Sciences (a faculty mentor must be identified by the student)

To apply for conditional graduate admission, applicants need to:

  1. Complete an online international student application. (Application fee waived for international undergraduate applicants.) Please apply for the start date that you expect to complete ELS 112. We will require a new application to update a start date.
     
  2. On the application under Item 4 of the checklist (Personal Information), please answer "Yes" to the following question:

    Email your transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Transcripts must be issued in English or accompanied by a certified translation. You may submit scanned copies in PDF format to elsapps1@siue.edu
     
  3. Submit a copy of your passport biographical (photo) page to elsapps1@siue.edu
     
  4. Submit any requirements of the graduate program as listed at the Graduate School website. You are not required to submit standardized tests such as GRE or GMAT until you complete your English language training and apply for full admission.
     
  5. Contact an ELS Counselor and complete an ELS Language Center application form: www.els.edu/en/HowToApply. The closest ELS Center to the SIUE campus is located in St. Louis, Missouri. The director of the St. Louis ELS Center is Allan Stout, astout@els.edu. However, you may attend an ELS center in any location.

    Submit letter of admission from ELS or a copy of your ELS issued I-20 to elsapps1@siue.edu. You also may mail documents to:

Requirements for Full Admission

Any standardized testing requirements that apply can be postponed in the conditional admission application, but must be met prior to SIUE granting full admission. These requirements will be outlined in the student's letter of conditional admission.
 
Fulfillment of any other requirements outlined in the letter of conditional admission, for example prerequisite courses.
 
Proof of successful completion of ELS 112 or satisfactory TOEFL or IELTS score report.
 
Financial Forms are required for students planning to attend on an F-1 student visa. Students offered conditional admission are issued the initial I-20 from ELS. Financial verification forms will be required by SIUE in order to grant full admission. Students must provide proof of financial support for one academic year to be issued an SIUE I-20.

Original Transcripts: SIUE will require original transcripts be mailed or presented to the Admissions Office prior to granting full admission.
