International Students' Frequently Asked Questions

Who is an international student?

SIUE defines an international student as any student who is neither a U.S. citizen nor a permanent resident (i.e., holds a "green card").


How do international students apply?

Where do I send application, fee and/or required documents?

Remember to sign your visa form and financial statement.  Photocopies of transcripts can not be accepted. 


Can I pay the application fee by credit card?

Yes.  SIUE accepts international credit cards online.


When will I find out if I am admitted?


What are the TOEFL or IELTS requirements?

All students with non-resident visas and/or foreign academic credentials whose first language is not English must demonstrate adequate English proficiency before admission.

Where can I improve my English skills?

Unfortunately, SIUE does not have an Intensive English Language Program at this time.  There are universities in the St. Louis area that offer intensive English, including  St. Louis University.


Is the TOEFL required of transfer students who have attended U.S. colleges?


How long are TOEFL scores valid?

Two years.


Are international students required to take the SAT, ACT or GRE?

International students applying for undergraduate study at SIUE are not required to take the SAT or ACT.

Many graduate programs have additional testing requirements for consideration of an application.  A full list of graduate programs and their testing and admissions requirements can be found here.

What is a financial statement?


Are scholarships or financial aid available for international students?

Unfortunately, SIUE does not have financial aid available for undergraduate international students. 

International graduate students can apply for graduate assistantships and are eligible for the Competitive Graduate Award.


What employment opportunities are available?

International students have limited opportunities for employment during their studies at SIUE.  Details here.
