How does SIUE support your professional growth or activity as a Teacher-Scholar?
"The primary mission of SIUE is undergraduate education.  This results in undergraduates that are extremely well-prepared to adapt to research projects.  I have found great support from the help of students in my research, as well as in outreach activities."

What is a unique aspect of your professional life that enhances your service to the academic or greater community?
"As an earthquake engineer, I find that my skills are very valuable to our region, both to help train future engineers to design earthquake-resistant buildings and bridges, as well as to educate the community to become more earthquake-aware."

Please share how one mentor or event shaped your career decision to become a university professor.
"It is so difficult to pinpoint just one!  So many people have encouraged me in so many ways throughout my career.  But I think probably the greatest factor influencing my own decision to become a university professor was getting to work with grad students and professors on a major research project while I myself was still a junior at the University of Maryland.  I saw how interesting, diverse, and important academic activity could be beyond the classroom.  It is this personal experience as an undergraduate researcher that makes me want to share the experience with others."
