Equity-Minded Leadership: Fostering Diversity and Transformative Institutional Change Presentation

Sponsored by the School of Education Diversity Committee

As institutions of higher education become increasingly diverse, equity-minded leadership is key to ensuring all students have access to opportunities. Students from underrepresented groups experience challenges navigating the college-going process when institutional structures and supports are culturally unresponsive and equity is not at the forefront of institutional decision-making. Thus, in this professional development session we explore the importance of equity-minded leadership and transformative institutional changes that ensure we as leaders are responsive to the needs of and provide opportunities for all students.

Date:

Thursday, October 24, 2013
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Location: University Club, Morris University Center
Facilitators: Dr. Anjalé D. Welton

Biographies:  Dr. Anjalé D. Welton's scholarship primarily examines the educational opportunity structures of students of color from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Welton examines how institutional and social structures (race, social class, faculty support, tracking, etc.) shape the connections students of color make to educational resources, navigate school and ultimately matriculate to postsecondary education. Other research areas include problematizing the politics of race and diversity in school reform and improvement, underrepresented groups (persons of color and women) navigating the pipeline to academia, and youth of color voice and leadership. Her professional experiences include coordinator of a leadership and empowerment program for urban youth, a facilitator of an urban education teacher preparation program, and a teacher in large urban districts.
