
HIRING UNIT: OFFICE OF THE PROVOST AND VICE CHANCELLOR FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
TITLE/RANK: Director, Center for STEM Research, Education, and Outreach
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is establishing a university-wide center, the mission of which is to develop, strengthen, and promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research, education and outreach in the region. We are seeking an innovative, visionary leader for the center to provide centralized leadership for STEM research, education and outreach activities across all academic units at SIUE. Specifically, the director will: (a) coordinate strategies for enhancing external funding for new and existing STEM initiatives; (b) oversee outreach activities aimed at enhancing professional competencies in STEM education for P-20 students and teachers in the region; (c) engage in networking activities with local educational and corporate entities; and (d) conduct effective assessment of the center’s initiatives. The position of director is a 12-month appointment with the opportunity for tenure in one of the university’s existing departments. The director will report to the Associate Provost for Research and will supervise a staff.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Fiscal – beginning July 1, 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter, with the possibility of renewal. 100% appointment.

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with experience.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: A terminal degree and eligibility for rank of Associate Professor is required. However, a Full Professor with terminal degree in a STEM-related field is preferred and experience working with P-12 populations is highly desirable. The successful candidate must possess experience creating cross-disciplinary collaborative teams focused on STEM research, education and/or community outreach activities. A demonstrated ability to effectively lead others and a record of working collaboratively with internal and external academic and corporate constituents is critical to the success of the director and, therefore, the center. Extensive experience in successful grant writing and capability to lead institutional change processes in a university setting are also essential.
