Service Credit for Unused Sick Leave

Per SURS, you receive additional service credit for any unused and unpaid regular sick leave if your retirement annuity begins within 60 days after you terminate employment with SIUE.  (This does not include Extended Sick leave.)

Any payable sick leave is excluded from this additional credit.  You receive additional service credit only for any unpaid portion.  The only payable sick leave at SIUE is the SK97 time, or regular sick leave earned after 1984 until 1997, which is payable at 50%.

Also, the payable portion of the SK97 time is not earnings for retirement purposes and will not increase your retirement benefit.

SURS Service credit is granted for unused and unpaid sick leave verified by SIUE in accordance with the following schedule:

Full work days less than 20 days = no service credit

20-59 full work days = 0.25 years of service credit

60-119 full work days = 0.50 years of service credit

120-179 full work days = 0.75 years of service credit

180 or more full work days = 1 year of service credit
