NEWS YOU CAN USE

SUGGESTIONS FOR CHECK OUT

Finals week is fast approaching and University Housing residents will be checking out of their living units.  The following are some suggestions for a successful checkout:

At Cougar Village, make sure that you take all of your trash to the dumpsters located in the parking lots.  At the Residence Halls, trash should be taken to the trash room on each floor.

Initiate a work order if you need to have a large piece of furniture discarded.  Do not place carpet or furniture in dumpsters.  Items will be picked up and discarded at no charge during the end of the year check out period.

All University furniture should be in your living unit.  No furniture should be in any storage area.

Closet doors should not be removed.  If any closet door is found to be off the hinges or damaged in any way, charges will be assessed to either repair or replace the door.

All personal items should be removed from the living unit.  Charges will be assessed if personal items are left in the living unit.

Make sure your living unit is clean.  Cleaning charges will be assessed if living units are left excessively dirty.

Any items that have been used for decorating in your living unit should be removed from walls, doors, etc.  Any damage from tape being used on painted surfaces or entrance doors, excessive use of tacks and nails are subject to charges.

Make sure your doors and windows are locked before you leave.  The air conditioners in the apartments at Cougar Village should be turned off.  At Woodland, Prairie and Bluff Halls, the cooling unit fan should be left on “low” and the temperature setting dial left in the middle position.  At Evergreen Hall the digital thermostat should be set to the highest position and the fan on “low”.

Please do not drive or park on the grounds to load your vehicle.  Damage charges will be issued if damage is done to the grounds by parking on non surfaced areas.

If checking out of a 400 side Cougar Village apartment, make sure the mailbox key is turned in at the Commons Building by the last person checking out of the apartment.

Be sure to make an appointment with your Resident Assistant to check out of your living unit.

 LANDSCAPING FERTILIZERS

As Spring approaches UHFM Groundsmen will be applying landscaping fertilizers and herbicides to the grounds at Cougar Village, Woodland, Prairie, Bluff and Evergreen Halls.  The fertilizers/herbicides are applied to maintain the most aesthetically pleasing grounds possible for University Housing.  The following products may be used during this application:

Herbicide – Glyphosate
Herbicide – Oryzalin/Surflan
Herbicide – 2-4-d/Super Trimee
Fertilizer – Nitrogen/potash
Herbicide – Snapshot

The date of the application depends upon the weather.  Land markers will be used at points of entry indicating that treatment is taking place in certain areas.  If you have any questions regarding the use of chemicals, Product application rates, or other questions concerning this matter, please contact UHFM at extension 3626 or 2070.

DAMAGE CHARGES

The following information should help you avoid damage charges at check out.

Residents are responsible for the care of their living unit and of all furniture, equipment, and attachments within it.

All breakage, damage, and the need for general maintenance and repairs must be reported to University Housing Facilities Management through the UHFM Service Desk work order request system at www.siue.edu/housing.  UHFM will make repairs and forward charges for any damages.

Residents may not alter University furniture in their living unit beyond its intended set-up methods.  Mattresses and bed springs must remain on their respective frames.  In addition, dressers and desks may not be stacked.  All University furniture should remain in the living unit.

Residents are responsible for damages if they undertake repairs of any nature.  Residents tampering with items that require repair by University Housing Facilities Management can be charged with resulting damages.  The physical condition of the living unit should not be altered.

EARTH DAY

The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970, and this day has been set aside each year to bring attention to the health of our planet.  Earth Day is observed in the U.S., Canada and several other countries throughout the world.  There are lots of things each of us can do to make for a greener earth.  Check out “Earth Day” on the internet for ways and suggestions you can help.

Yesterday, April 22, 2008, was the official observance of Earth Day.  Although this newsletter is a day beyond the official Earth Day, every day can be a day that we can help our environment.

REMINDERS

Bluff, Prairie and Woodland Halls:  cooking in respective residential rooms is not permitted.  Food can be prepared in the kitchenette located in each wing and should be cleaned immediately after use.  If food is stored in your room, it should be kept in sealed container.

Cougar Village and Evergreen Hall:  Please practice caution when cooking.  Any item on the stove or in the oven should be monitored at all times.  Cooking in Evergreen Hall should take place in the designated kitchen area of each unit.  Do not use cooking appliances of any kind in bedrooms.  Residents in suites and any other interested resident have access to cooking facilities in community kitchens located throughout the building.  Please make sure the stove is completely turned off when cooking is completed, whether it is a community kitchen in Evergreen Hall or the stove in your living unit at Cougar Village.

Please submit a work order anytime you feel the temperature of your living unit is unsatisfactory.  Now that the air conditioning is on, it is important to close all windows to allow the cooling system to work most efficiently.

Please make sure that trash and cigarette butts are properly disposed of.  Recently the exterior around the Residence Halls, especially near smoking shelters, has been subject to improper disposal of debris.

PROJECTS

The roofing contractors have now finished the 500 side of Cougar Village.  Work is currently underway on the 400 side with work occurring in the 421-431 cluster.  They have finished 431 and 430 and will work their way to 401.  The contractor anticipates 14 more working days to finish the project if the weather remains good.

Building washing is occurring on the 500 side of Cougar Village with buildings 501-508 and 517-519 completed.  Progress will continue from 509 to 531.

Project work will be halted during Finals week on roofs and building washing.

E-MAIL NEWSLETTER

This will be the last e-mail newsletter of this academic year.  In addition, this will be the last newsletter that Janice Landrem, Secretary IV at UHFM will be sending out.  Janice has been responsible for assembly and distributing these letters since the first publication.  Janice has worked for University Housing since October, 1991.  The staff of University Housing wish Janice well on a much deserved retirement and thank her for all she has done to help University Housing grow and try to meet residents' needs.  Feel free to wish her well at jlandre@siue.edu.

We hope that the information that has been included has been helpful to our students.  We will begin the newsletter again in the fall.  UHFM would like to wish a pleasant summer for all residents of University Housing whether checking out or staying for the summer.
