She’s one in a million (or at least the nation…)

Congratulations to Lindsey Nixon, Assistant Community Director for Family Housing, who was selected as the American College Personnel Association’s Commission for Housing and Residential Life’s 2008 Outstanding Graduate Student Staff Member!  This is a national award that was announced last week at the annual convention in Atlanta.  Here are just a few of Lindsey’s accomplishments:

  • Created a mission statement for the Family Resource Center (FRC);
  • Overhauled the child accountability process to encourage positive behavior by aligning it with child development theory;
  • Increased communication with parents of FRC children (Family Housing residents) by meeting individually with parents each semester to discuss their child’s interactions at the FRC;
  • Created a student supervisor position in the FRC;
  • Collaborated with a SIUE faculty member to create a sports program for the children – students in a kinesiology course receive project credit for working at the FRC with the children;
  • Provided quality programming for the adults – including a social justice program that showcased Family Housing residents sharing their experiences with being in bi-racial relationships, same sex relationships, etc.; and
  • Integrated a Faculty Fellow into Family Housing to encourage faculty/student interaction.

All of these positive changes are due to Lindsey’s innovation, ethic of care, and commitment to student learning.  The FRC program provides residents of Family Housing with the necessary support for their children so that they can focus on their classes and pursue their academic goals.  She has also provided meaningful opportunities for non-traditional students to come together for support and learning.
