Second Year Experience (SYE)

The Second Year Experience (SYE) at SIUE is designed to meet the unique needs of our second year residents through social interaction, career exploration, personal reflection and academic initiatives.SYE Logo

The Second Year Experience (SYE) will provide students will opportunities that will benefit them their second year and beyond. Through career exploration initiatives and participation in various activities, the SYE will present second year students the chance to create and work towards academic and career goals.

Those interested in becoming part of the SYE program should indicate their interest on their University Housing application. Current residents have the option to become a part of the program during the University Housing Reservation Process.

Opportunities for Career, Academic and Social Support

  • Gain exposure to the Career Development Center through meeting with a counselor in regards to your major or career planning and complete a professional resume, along with a mission statement. A professional resume is the first step in securing a competitive internship or job while in college.
  • Take part in two social outings, coordinated by University Housing, with fellow SYE members. Social outings facilitate community and networking opportunities.
  • Attend the academic planning workshop and complete a Making Academic Progress (MAP) plan of action. A MAP will assist you in outlining your academic goals and progress.
  • Contribute to one service learning initiative per semester. Service initiatives are an asset to personal and professional development.

Program Requirements

To get the most out of the Second Year Experience, certain program requirements have been established. Students who complete the Second Year Experience program will be honored at the Kimmel Leadership Awards Banquet at the end of the academic year. Full participation in the following activities is required:
