Second Year Experience (SYE) Program

SYE LogoThe Second Year Experience (SYE) Program at SIUE is designed to meet the unique needs of our sophomore students through social interaction, career exploration, personal reflection, and academic initiatives. University Housing realizes that the second year can be a little daunting for many, and research has shown that second year students often feel a variety of feelings (disconnectedness to the university, lack of academic commitment, indecisiveness with majors, social integration, etc.) that lead to high levels of attrition or disengagement.  This feeling is often referred to as the “sophomore slump.”

The SYE program was initiated to help second year residential students “resist the slump” and succeed at SIUE. This program will not only provide opportunities that will benefit the here and now, but it will prepare students for a successful transition to their junior and senior years.  Through career exploration initiatives and participation in various activities, the SYE program will present second year students the chance to create both academic and career goals.

Those interested in becoming part of the SYE program should indicate their interest on their University Housing application.  Current residents have the option to become a part of the program during the University Housing's Reservation Process.
