Faculty Fellows

Putting the Pieces Together:  Living & Learning at SIUE

Why are the Faculty Fellows part of University Housing?

  • To help create an engaged living & learning community
  • To serve as an academic and personal resource for a small group of residents
  • To provide an opportunity for students to interact with faculty on a more personal level
  • To bridge the gap between in class and out of call experiences to facilitate "seamless" learning
  • To have a lot of fun!

What do Faculty Fellow do, exactly?

  • Attend a Welcome Reception & Orientation.
  • Greet residents and their families on Move In Day (schedule permitting)
  • Attend periodic wing or building meetings
  • Attend programs planned by your Resident Assistant...or coordinate one of your own (funding available)
  • Bring students to education or cultural events on campus (funding available)
  • Make your office hours schedule available to residents
  • Host a dinner at the MUC, a University Housing facility, or even your home (funding available)
  • Attend periodic "brown bag" lunch discussions to share success stories, explore current student issues, and provide feedback to University Housing staff

What is the actual time commitment?

  • Welcome Reception & Orientation (1.5 hours)
  • Greet residents on Move In Day (approximately 2 hours)
  • All other activities are optional.  We hope that you are able to visit your living and learning community at least once per month.
  • Most opportunities for interaction will occur in the evenings.
  • The quality of interaction is more important that the quantity; however, you will find it easier to connect with residents if you are a "familiar face".
  • Faculty with childcare responsibilities have been effective Faculty Fellows in the past. Many activities are appropriate for families, and residents often welcome the chance to be with a family as they have left younger siblings at home, are dealing with homesickness, etc.
  • Bottom line:  approximately 8 hours per semester.  You are welcome and encouraged to do more as your schedule permits!

What's in it for you?

  • University Housing goodies, like t-shirts, mugs, and more...
  • Meal fund to take your residents to lunch or dinner
  • Programming money to sponsor activities that you think would be beneficial to students
  • Recognition from the Director of University Housing and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
  • The opportunity to make a difference in the lives of residential students at SIUE!
