Student Staff Positions


Resident Assistant

The Resident Assistant (RA) position is a student employed by University Housing.  Each RA lives in a community of 38-64 residents either on a wing in a residence hall or in the Cougar Village apartments.  The duties of an RA include, but are not limited to:  developing connections with residents, providing educational opportunities for residents, making a difference in students’ and staff lives, working with fellow staff members, responding to roommate conflicts or crisis situations, documenting policy violations, serving as a positive role model to residents, and completing administrative tasks.

University Housing employs 74 Resident Assistants; 44 in the 4 residence halls and 30 in Cougar Village apartments.  The RA position is a one-year commitment (August-May), with the opportunity to re-apply for subsequent years.  Students who have lived on SIUE’s campus for 2 semesters have the opportunity to apply for Spring semester openings.  These students are expected to continue their employment for the upcoming academic year.  Current RAs have the chance to continue as summer RAs.

RA Selection begins during the fall semester for the following academic year. Students interested in applying to be an RA must attend one of the mandatory Information Sessions in October - November. Students should watch for marketing materials within University Housing beginning in October and for information on the University Housing website (http://www.siue.edu/housing/employmentopp/applyforRA.shtml).

To be eligible for the RA position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Attend and sign in at one RA Information Session.
  • Turn in a completed application by the published deadline.
  • Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA (RAs are required to maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA throughout their employment).
  • Have lived in University Housing for 2 semesters before becoming an RA (summer is counted as a semester)
  • Must be in good financial, academic and disciplinary standing with the University.
  • Able to committ to one academic year (August-May).
  • Cannot student teach, be enrolled in the School of Pharmacy program, or have a full-time internship/Co-Op while employed.

Desk Manager (Residence Halls and Cougar Village Commons)

Responsible for the operation of the front desk at the Residence Halls and Cougar Village Commons.  To serve the residents of the building, the Desk Manager will be required to exhibit good quality service, monitor the security system, control access to the building/living area/administrative offices, provide general information, distribute and maintain forms utilized in each area, assist with key control, coordinate communication between on-duty staff members, assist with the use of meeting spaces and public areas of the area, assist residents with maintenance problems, and other administrative duties. 

Customer service skills required for the position include: handling resident concerns, receiving and directing calls and inquiries with a professional manner, displaying a willingness to work with people other than staff members, and being able to communicate assertively.

Desk Managers are expected to:

  • Maintain confidentiality in compliance with University policies and the Privacy Act
  • Be thoroughly familiar with and assist in enforcing the policies and procedures of University Housing and the University
  • Work overnight shifts (e.g. 1 a.m. - 7 a.m.) and weekend shifts when working in a Residence Hall
  • Work during break periods when working for Evergreen Hall or Cougar Village Commons

To be eligible for the Desk Manager position, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Completed at least one semester at SIUE
  • Will prefer applicants who have lived on-campus at least one full semester.
  • Be enrolled in and maintain at least the minimum enrollment requirements each semester
  • Hold and maintain a 2.3 cumulative GPA or higher
  • Must be in good financial and disciplinary standing with the University
  • Turn in a completed application

Family Resource Center Student Staff (FRC, Cougar Village)

The Family Resource Center was established to assist the 120 student families that reside at University Housing's Cougar Village. The Center offers a variety of programming for married couples and parents and their children ranging from academic and social to creative and educational. Student staff assist with programming efforts geared toward the children living in Family Housing.

To be eligible for the FRC position, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Prefer at least a 2.3 cumulative GPA.
  • Must be in good financial and disciplinary standing with the University.

FRC Staff Application

Student Maintenance Worker (University Housing Facilities Management)

The Student Maintenance Worker staff is responsible for cleaning hallways, breezeways, offices, restrooms and laundries. This staff may assist with University Housing recycling efforts.

Requirements: Strength/Ability to move/stack furniture. Must be able to work 4 or 8 hour time blocks. Hours for shifts: 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Some weekend work may be required. Must have valid drivers license. Some clerical duties may be involved.
