The Cougar Academy is a program for 30 incoming first-year students at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville who will be living on-campus. The Cougar Academy will provide students the opportunity to start making connections with members of the university community and to help develop their leadership skills. It is a two day workshop that includes meeting new people, learning about leadership opportunities, reflecting on your own leadership qualities, getting involved with residence hall organizations, plus much more!
The definition of a group of large cats that live together is called a Pride. Therefore, each “class” of The Cougar Academy is a PRIDE.
Participants will be allowed to move in during the afternoon of Tuesday, August 19, 2008. The Cougar Academy will officially start Tuesday evening with dinner and games. The Academy will continue all day on Wednesday, August 20th and Thursday, August 21st.
A requirement of The Academy will be your participation in the Movers-n-Shakers program. This program asks current students to volunteer to help students unload and move in on Friday, August 22, 2008. As a Mover-n-Shaker, you will receive a free t-shirt and will need to attend a meeting on Thursday evening. Signing up for The Cougar Academy includes Movers-n-Shakers, so you do not need to submit this form.
Another requirement is meeting as a group on a monthly basis. Each PRIDE will meet on a regular basis throughout the year to strengthen relationships and develop meaningful activities.
The Cougar Academy is the perfect way to start your SIUE experience! Not only will you meet new people who may become friends, you will learn about leadership opportunities in University Housing and what it means to be a leader. You will already be ahead of the curve regarding leadership knowledge and experience. This program is for everyone!!! It is for those of you who haven’t had any leadership experiences, but want to; and it is for those of you who have already been leaders and want to continue your leadership development.
